Driving Standards

Featured Replies

Over the past week I seem to be noticing more and more just how poor the standard of driving is getting on our roads. Are we not suppose to have one of the hardest driving tests in the world?! Lots of the usual annoying things like what must be hundreds of cars just coming straight round a roundabout without indicating, people cutting others up, people not managing to stay in their lanes etc. But its the really stupid stuff that gets me, sat in grid lock traffic, blocking the bottom of a bus lane so i couldnt get out. I mean, its not that difficult to leave a few foot gap is it?! People sitting in box junctions, people thinking because they cant drive and use their phone they just stop where they are when it rings. Double parking, fog lights, no lights, people thinking because they are going 50mph in a 30mpg limit i should be able to mind read them coming round a blind corner as im pulling out.

I know its a ongoing problem, and im not the first to moan, but it just seems like things are getting really bad recently.

Your right i think unfortunately matt, was out last with a woman right behind me on bloody ice , never mind mate its christmas , think of good cheer and all that guff.

Driving standards are a lot poorer now, and less police on the road to control them :(

It's the nature of the modern car that does it I think. Safety systems, ABS, Traction Control, coupled to a general disregard for others in our society today. Thankfully I did an advanced drivers course some years ago, and it still helps. The main problem here in Central Scotland, is there appears to be one speed limit, 40MPH People do 40 no matter what road they are on.

I'm a firm believer that it corresponds with issues in modern society - it's the me me me first generation.

And therein lies the crux of the matter.

These people exist everywhere!

Actually I reckon that in West Lothian people go hell for leather regardless of the conditions.

One guy behind me the other day straight lined a roundabout and blared the horn, flashed the lights etc because I was following the lane as you're supposed to. No idea some people.

I find the drivers in West Lothian inconsistent. One day everyones plodding along, then you get a day when there seems to be nothing but speed demons. With so many roundabouts, it can be 'interesting' especially if I'm using the Moggy Traveller. It's not exactly quick off the mark, and some drivers come round roundabouts so fast, I end up getting the full horn, lights, hand gestures. Water off a ducks back. I usually wave, as if to say thank you, and that seems to get them more miffed.

Indeed, 38ft bright orange one to be exact, you`d think people would see me coming wouldnt you?! All lit up with the 6ft LED blind and that but no, tonight i still had someone pull right out in front of me. I think some areas seem to have better drivers than others though for sure.

Im not sure if its a police thing or plain stupidity. I`m just amazed at how hard our test is, but yet the roads are a joke. Forget speeders, mobile phones, and the other things for a min and just attack people who just cant drive full stop, people that panic and are actually scared of driving, who couldnt tell you what a give way sign looks like and take them off the road and see how much of a difference it makes.

Matt

:wonder:Glad I'm not the only one who has noticed this, I dont claim to be a great driver but there are some real prats about. In snow and ice where it is only safe to be doing 20 -30 people in 4x4's and reps think that everyone should be doing 60 and fly along right next to your bumper, great idea when you need to brake. I think some people see snow and think must drive quicker, sod everone else, rules dont apply. One guy decided that red traffic lights no longer applied :wonder: .

Its no woner there are so many accidents in the snow, surely all it takes is a bit of common sense leave bigger gaps and brake and accelerate gently to an appropriate speed.

I think it may be because you were driving a bus, and people were fed up of said bus using aforementioned bus lanes to jump traffic? :notme:

Buses!?! In bus lanes?!? PREPOSTEROUS!

Whatever next.

I was more getting on to the point of the general public's apathy/hatred of bus lanes.

Yeah I get that when I'm in the camper. Mind you a VW 2.5 Tdi is probably a bit quicker than the Moggy.

Just look at all the twisted crash barriers round the roundabouts tells you how often the corsas and saxos are wrapped round them (not that I go in for sweeping generalisations!)

ban women from driving and thats 90% of the problem solved!!!!!

There's probably more people (OAPs!) driving in areas they don't know at the moment. What with the worn state of the roads, snow/ice cover, heavey traffic, dirty signs etc. it is near impossible to negotiate a strange town as you can't see the road markings until it's too late, if at all. But yes, the rules on 'give way' seem to have been thrown out the window over the last few years especially. And of course as soon as you start driving defensively assuming people will pull ot on you, the slower you go, and the more people pull out on you! LOL.

 I've seen some really hideous chav cars lately. There's a Saxo in shocking pink metalic flip paint, exhaust the size of a dustbin lid, and the bird who drives it has a face like a chipped cup

I think newyearfield roundabout must on it's 10th set of railings now  I think some chavs take the phrase "Straight on at the roundabout" as a literary meaning to plough over it. :D

Bus lane doesnt jump any traffic at all, goes thru the middle of the shops where all the bus stops are (no normal traffic) and comes out as a T junction where said car blocked the lane. Cant see how this would be causing someone to block it on purpose.

DONT EVEN GO THERE.

Since changing from soldier to Driver I have also noticed how S*** peoples driving is. the one PET hate I have is rear fogs. if you can see the car infront that is 50m or so up the road then the people behind can see you so there is no need to have them on.

unfortunatly in a truck you cant get past them so the light doesnt dazle you so you are stuck there till they disapear.

Fogs!! Now your talking, we had a small amount of fog everyone seems to think the need as many lights as possible on!

I agree with all the points raised in the original post, with lane discipline especially at or near roundabout the main annoyance, I mean how hard can it be to decide where you are going and then pick the appropriate lane! I've managed no problem for the last 14 years.
