Rotational rumble/thudding?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

My 05 vRS 55k has developed a rotational thudding/throbbing/ rumbling type noise from the front of the car at all speeds. Now it sounded like the wheel bearings were shot as a few people thought the same, so i had the front wheel bearings replaced and a check over and everything seems to be fine and in good nick and nothing is loose and im getting no vibrations through the wheel either but the rotational thudding noise is still there, so could it be the tyres, im running Sport Contact 2's and these have around 2-3k miles left in them.

Im slightly miffed to what this noise now is and its getting rather annoying.

Any thoughts and ideas???

Thanks in advance

jimmy :)

Long shot, but it's not a deformation of the tyre is it? Try swapping front to rear, see if it's still there. Easy/cheap fix if it is them.

Check your tyres for flat sections - jack up trye and spin while holding your hand on the tread area - I've had that with NCTs on an Orion! Goodyear coughed up.

It could be a drive shaft out of balance....

before you had the bearings fitted, if you had asked the question re the rumble noise and the make of tyre, i would have said it was a tyre problem, and not a bearing problem

Cheers for the replies guys. The rumble/thudding is there whether the clutch is engaged or not whilst moving which makes me think it is tyres possibly?? Any mechanically minded people out there think otherwise, it wouldnt be a gearbox problem would it??

Cheers

if it does it more when you have a slight lock on rather than in a straight line i'd say inner cv joint

Sorry to keep going on guys, ive swapped the wheels round yet the problem still persists, any other ideas?? Whats the worst case senario...diff bearing failing in the box?? or could it be just that all the tyres are shot, highly umlikely i think.

Thanks in advance :)

when you had the wheels off did you actually check the tyres, i.e. for damage, uneven wear etc

Yes mate, there was nothing untoward with the tyres.

Hi

I have a 05 fabia vrs and a rumbeling on the n/s/f the drive shaft was replaced the bearing on the gearbox was found ok the tyers moved from the back to the front still the rumble it starts around 20mph

That sounds similar to what ive got mate, mine is quite noticable around the 30mph mark. Still baffled to what it is, may just have to put up with it until something fails or goes bang :(

Hi, my VRS has just been in for possible front wheel bearing due to rumbling noise, turns out to be rear nearside tyre slightly out of shape. Was shown slight up and down movement in tyre when wheel spun. Easy to miss if not pointed out, unless you are sure your tyres are ok, I would check again, don't wait for one of them to go bang.
