I Think My Car Thermostat Is Stuck Open, Need Help?

Featured Replies

HI guys i think my fabia vrs thermostat is stuck open

The engine takes a very long time to reach operating temperature, Takes about 7 or 8 miles to get up to temperature, and the heat coming from the heater is only luke-warm

So i want to know were the thermostat is located on my fabia vrs and can i do a DIY job to replace it

If i cant do it myself how much will it cost to replace.

Thanks

my cars always taken that long to get warm in the winter, once it does though the heat from the vents could melt your face with the fan set to 4 and thermo on 26

Is there any other ways of checking if its stuck open or not

If it was stuck open it would be taking more than 7 miles to warm up. Trust me, in this weather I have seen my temp gauge drop when the heater is going full blast.

Actually it's normal for it to take 7-8 miles to warm up (get to 90 on the temperate gauge). The other morning (-4 degrees) i was following slow traffic (40-50mph) all the way to work, it took 12miles before the temperature gauge hit 90.

If the thermostat was stuck open then you would even see 90c in this icey cold weather mate.

So nothing to worry about, it's just a combo of diesel engines, and the icey cold weather

thanks for the help guys

one last question, my car is going for a service next week should i get it changed as its a cheap part. as my vrs done 90k, i dont now if it has been changed or not

Thanks

If you are having doubts about the thermostat might be a good idea. Only takes 10 minutes to change. So simply even a dealer could screw it up.

i would get it chjange that way your mind is at rest. Diesels always take ages to warm up in cold weather if it realy anoys you then theres no harm in waiting a while before you set off in the morn!

if it was jammed open it wouldnt reach normal operating temp in winter.

i am going to get it replaced next week, its booked in for a service

thanks

In this recent winter chill, I've actually had my engine start cooling down from 90 degrees C whilst sat idling whilst it was powering an inverter.

Don't touch it mate, mine has done 92k and takes about that long to warm up in the cold weather.

You can see the temperature needle drop slightly when the thermostat opens and lets the cold coolant from the radiator into the engine, mine does it briefly then is back to 90.

Apart from the increase in fuel consumption and engine wear at cold temperatures. I only leave mine idling in the morning if it's a window scraping day. any other weather and I'm in and off.

TBH, changing it is a waste of money....if it 'aint broke, don't fix it!

Ben

mine has been like it recently (octy TDi). It's got to be the cold weather and mine has also been cooloing down when stuck in traffic. If you want to check it, an old method was to take out the stat and drop it in a bowl of boiling water to see if it opens and then take it back out and see if it closes again.

MAY BE A PROBLEM IF THE ENGINE IS COOLING DOWN WHILE IN TRAFFIC, CAN'T SAY MINE HAS EVER COOLED DOWN, SO MAYBE IT IS STUCK OPEN?

Oh hell, sorry about the caps, just noticed it emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Mine doesn't normally but has been during the cold weather. Normal service has resumed now it's warmed up a bit but going up North tomorrow so I will see what happens then. Apparently more snow on the way up there.

  • 2 weeks later...

My petrol fabia 1.4 is not warming up, even after 20 miles: The temperature gauge is at the bottom and the heater is feeble. I am certain the thermostat is gone. How hard are they to replace. Access seems a bitch due to the battery cover.

is it a 1.4 diesel or petrol? I just drove for about 30 mins and my temp gauge only just started coming off the bottom! stop start driving doesn't do much to warm the engine, my normal trip down national speed limit roads gets it climbing a bit faster
