As far as I understand things, all VAG diesels are cambelt driven - change at 60K.

VW at least are now recommending 4 years/40,000 miles for the PD engines. However according to the Yeti service schedule (which of course refers to the newer CR diesels used in the Yeti) timing belt replacement is every 180,000km with no time constraint.

I am sure I read somewhere, that the new CR engines are chain driven.

All the Diesel engines have a timing belt for driving the camshafts. Presumably the same belt or another belt drives a counterrotating balancing shaft at twice engine speed to remove secondary order vibrations.

The CR engines need replacement at 150,000 km and the PD engines at 120,000 km (Not relevant for the Yeti)..

Petrol engines also have timing belts and shorter replacement intervals.

Chain drives sound like a better solution, but are not. They make noise and also need replacement at about the same intervals. There were lots of problems with Mercedes engines with chain drive of the OHC back in the 1980's, Owners just didi not believe it necessary to replace the chain - WRONG! The real HD system would be a stacked gear system - heavy and expensive.

Now, can anybody explain to me why it is easy to see spelling mistakes AFER having posted, but not before?

The very latest VW diesels are cam belt with a new belt designed to last the life of the engine. A change is recommended at about 100k for safety though. I believe that the new long life belts are made by Continental and can be found on their international website (or at least the German one). The only current chain driven VW diesels are the 3 cylinder 1.4 tdi units (as in the Fabia / Roomster) and the only gear driven TDI engines are the 2.5 5 cyl and 5.0 10 cyl engines as found in the Touareg. (I knew that my days at VW would come in useful eventually emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif ).

I miss the "Thank you button.

Thank you shrub; I knew some of the diesel engines were chain driven, but was not sure if it was ALL of the new units or just the 1.4.
