Petrol engines - oil consumpion

Featured Replies

Hi,

i'm interested does anyone experienced oil consumption , especially on petrol engine, and in which amount ?

(in car manual is written that it is normal for engine to 'consume' 0,5l/1000 km )

Very few engines use that much oil after the run-in period. I haven't refilled any oil in mine after 4000 km. I check the oil level about once a week / about each time i fill up with diesel.

I read many years ago that VAG engines and possibly other German manufactured units too, burn oil from new, more than those from other car makers. This has something to do with the high quality manufacturing process. It is so long ago that I read it that I would be guessing what the process was but I think that it was to do with crosshatch honing of the cylinders. That a minimum milage needs to be passed during the running in period then the engines burn less oil than those from other manufacturers engines. What ever the reason , it sounded plausible at the time.

Have a diesel so no real comparison to petrol but so far after 1700 miles I have put in 0.5l of oil in to my TDI CR 140 taking it back to the full mark. To be honest though I'm not sure were it was after the PDI.

My previous Golf 2.0 TDI PD would use about 0.5l every 10,000 miles (as did the Octavia II TDI PD before that) the only occasion this changed was the 980 mile trip to Austria in 20 hours. Used 0.5l going and 0.5l coming back 6 days later. Don't think this is abnormal though and strangely by keeping the PD at the full mark it appeared less noisy.

The heaviest user of oil due to consumption in contrast to a leak I can think of would be my first Octavia I. This was a petrol 2.0ltr (115) which went though 0.5l every 4 to 5000 miles, whereas the the second Octavia I with the 1.8T (150) petrol used about the same as the diesel PD.

My Fabia vRS burnt about 0.5L per 10,000 miles as well. I followed Honest John's running in procedure with that (and with the Yeti) and I reckon it works!

See FAQ #15 and 16:

Just checked my 1.2 TSI again after around 900 miles and can't see that it's used any at all.
