Octavia 4X4 handling compared to Scoob??

Featured Replies

I currently have a new shape Impreza Turbo but the fuel bills are crippling me. As my wife has a Fabia vRS, I was thinking of swapping the Scoob for an Octavia 4X4 as I want something that is comparable in the wet...

Has anyone else done this? Is there much difference in the handling?

I would like a TDI engine - what options do I have? I seem to remember seeing someones profile on here with their 4X4 revoed to 230bhp - is that petrol or diesel? I'm presuming that's petrol.

Hello :wavey:

Can only think of one person who has gone Scoob (STI4) to 4x4 Octy and that is Stuart. I'll bump this up in the morning for him. Most other Scoob owners have gone for the RS. IMHO, in the wet, & provided it ain't too twisty ;) an RS will out handle a Scoob. The 4x4 is higher and softer, but as I asay, Stuart is your man for this one.

No such thing as a diesel 4x4 in the Skoda line-up unfortunately. Closest I think that Stuart was seriously considering was the Passat 4 Motion but you pay a premium for a VW badge. PD130 can be remapped to between 180-190bhp. :)

Not in the UK at least ;)

Wasn't the one available in Europe also ditched due to poor sales? :)

T'was still available all the same :)

Just a shame they have the steering wheel on the wrong side, i think that would have done quite well over here.

Yep definitely! If an Octy II 4x4 TDi appears, I'd be very tempted to trade up :D

Chris[/quote']There are very reliable rumours of a RHD new Octavia 4X4 Estate with 1.9 TDI PD 105bhp and 2.0 FSI 150bhp engine options circa March 2005.

The option of a 105bhp diesel totally underwhelms me. What a letdown! And at least the Estate isn't going to have to suffer the 1.4 16V 75 hp engine which is available for the Hatch.

Maybe I should change that to say I'll have one if they make a PD130 4x4 available ;)

Thanks for the prompt Jon !

Handling on the 4x4 is IMO better than my particular scoob, it was an Import with very hard suspension knocking out 290 hp & to be honest was a bit of a handful, handling was great until you encountered a bumpy road at speed when it would hop all over the place & a couple of times nearly went in the hedge.

I also found the scoob to be a bit laggy, the turbo taking a while to wind up whereas the Octy spins up really quickly & therefore on twisty roads Im sure its quicker. I found with the scoob I would often arive at the corner very quickly having spent a while winding the car up leading to a less than smooth driving style

My 4x4 is now modded, Ive spent about

If you want to change in the near future I would also say try a VRS, the 4x4 isnt currently available & the RS's are being knocked out for I think between 13-14000 brand new with 3 year warranty etc etc & if fuel is your primary consideration its a tadge better on economy having a high 6th gear, the 4x4 is only 5 speed but has slightly shorter ratios so accelerates rather well !!Stuart

The Octavia vRS has a 5 speed box.

I still miss my Impreza and would have another tomorrow. The Octavia is a fill in car for me.

Just spoken to someone who ought to know but wasnt meant to say to much and the GOOD NEWS is 2 litre Octy Diesel 4x4 is due in the showrooms in March/April 2005

YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

How many horsies, Stuart?

I guess whatever the 2 litre Diesel is at present until it spends a few hours in Peterbourough !!!

Sounds like the 140bhp unit then? Anyone know if these are as tunable as the 1.9 PD engines?

I believe Jabba have had a base amp for this engine for a little while now.....

That was the very reason for me to pick the 4x4 over a WRX. I already had old GT Turbo experience and liked the old-fashioned turbo kick but found the WRX a bit of a letdown in the low revs, with the kick softened away too. It is also more fuel-efficient, with a useful all-year avg of 30 mpg, although when I took the car to the track this weekend it did 9 mpg. :D

The car's now done over 40k kms and hasn't suffered from any breakages - unless you want me to mention the digital clock that has given me trouble since the weekend. Insurance is cheap, police will completely overlook you (they won't even notice you doing 120 mph), and maintenance doesn't cost much either because of the lengthened service intervals.

ATM they are still not as tunable as the old-style 1.9s but there are OBD programmes that will still give them a serious power and torque hike (a safe 170-180 hp).

Don't do it on a DSG car, however. The 'box will crack under too much torque.
