Homemade w8 light mod

Featured Replies

I was going do this on the cheap, so I thought I would pick up a couple of LEDs and mount them in the existing holder. I have already drilled the holes, but just need to decide which LEDs to get. Looking on the Maplin site, they sell some 12v LEDs, so I assume I should not need a resistor in series with them. However someone in Q&A says his broke and the reply was he needed a resistor.

If I do need a resistor, how can I calculator what resistance it needs to be?

Also should I go for:

- SB (Super Bright) 180mcd

- HE (High Efficiency) 30mcd

I guess HE, as they seem to have a similar brightness as to the other colours of LED they sell in this range.

Thanks,

Matt

Product Features

A range of 5mm diameter LEDs from the 12V series in a T-13/4 package. These LEDs are designed to connect across 12Vdc power supply rails. They have a 12V integral current limiting resistor, which means no external current limiter is required with a 12V supply.

180mcd? not sure if that is correct, i fitted 5000mcd LED's to my Octavia interior light (in the reading lamp area) and they were pretty bright, i would say the Superb LED's look around 2-3000mcd by comparison.

good luck with this. if u do this add pics with details been wanting to do this for ages

I would go for the super bright LEDs, otherwise they won't shine anywhere and you'll just have two useless red lights in your interior light!

The proper W8 / Superb lamp also has illumination for the symbols on the buttons for the map lights and on off switch.

Maybe I'll get a some SB and HE and try with both to see which is best....

I did think about buying the unit for a superb, but that costs money! I can do this for under a £1

Have taken a few pictures of the drilling holes, but now I need to source the LEDs, not sure I can make my Maplin order up to £35 to get free delivery, and none of the local branches (all about 25 miles away) have stock anyway. Useless!

I then have my heater washer jets to consider next :-) There again maybe I should really be thinking about fitting a new skylight to the house to prevent the additional cold water shower I seem to have in my bathroom at the moment....

Can only go with what they quote in their technical spec, which appeared to be the same on technical pdf they linked to. Might have to be a case of suck it and see...
