I picked up my new Octavia II face lifted version a few weeks before Christmas (59 plate) and I have now done just over 1,000 miles in the car and have a question on performance.

I bought the petrol version with dual zone, cruise and rear parking sensors all of which was a direct replacement for my "old" 08 plate Octavia II VRS.

I was persuaded by the salesman to part with my car when I took it in for its 10,000 mile service and I immediately I liked the facelift changes but there was not a VRS available so I had to wait 12 weeks for arrival.

When the day arrived for collection it was chucking it down and the car was sitting gleaming in the showroom and it was with some reluctance that after completing the paper work, I drove it home on the rain soaked main A road to my house.

Being unable to resist, and as the car was 'dirty' now anyway I decided on a nice clear stretch of road to give it some welly - just to see what it was like.

Hmmmm, that’s a bit unusual I thought, I’ve just had a new experience in a VRS, hitting the accelerator pedal off the stop and the countryside not going past me in a blur!

To say it was a bit of a disappointment in the performance was an understatement!

It had only 20 miles on the clock (which you can only read when stopped!) so I decided not to pass judgement until more miles had passed.

Next time I tried, the engine responded much better, and it’s a bit like that to this day, responds better second time of asking. Turbo boost problem?

Now after 1,000 miles of motoring experience with this new engine, which the salesman tells me is definitely the 200 bhp version but has been re engineered to give lower carbon emissions, its kind of difficult to describe the difference in driving this new car compared to my older model (of which I had two previously)

So here goes:-

By the way – Performance on paper is practically identical if anything a little faster which you all probably know.

Is it because I was so used to the older car(s) and I could change down by the engine note alone I wonder?

Possibly, I find that I run out of revs in 3rd about 80 ish once into 4th 80 – 100 comes now in a blink but it does it so quietly I feel that nothings happening!

2nd reminds me of my old car the most, hit the pedal and she sits up and we are off but again I seem to run out of revs quicker and have to change into 3rd sooner.

Sometimes I get a glimpse of the response as I think it should be in that it instantly responds to the accelerator but it’s not doing it every time.

Am I being to harsh? Is it just different? It has really taken the ‘shine’ off my new car.

Has anyone out there among you moved from an Octavia II petrol 200 bhp to the equivalent in the facelift model? I’d be very happy to hear your thoughts and experiences

interesting, why not try another just to see if yours does have a problem (or not?)

First I have heard of this sort of comparison so far, interested to hear others' experiences

The engine characteristics will probably be different as they use totally different engines

Your 2008 has the EA113 while the new FL has the EA888

Identical power outputs and size but the new one has chain driven cams

I was told they are 'bench run in'

Read the manual, it says to take it easy for the first 1k miles and gradually build up to full performance from that point. Weillying it with just 20 miles on the clock would have done it no favours at all, I wouldnt have expected the engine oil to have been at a suitable temp to corectly lubricate the turbo. Maybe the wellying has done some damage to something.

As already mentioned by another poster, your previous octy would have had the TFSI engine, the new one has a different TSI engine, with cam chain drive and a very different power delivery. It still has 200BHP but its delivered in a more progressive manor, it may not feel as quick but its still just as it was before.

This is my third brand new Octavia II VRS all driven in the same manner with no engine problems.

I hear what you say re the more progressive delivery - I suppose I will get used to it, just cant help feeling that when it comes to overtaking its not going to deliver the power 100% of the time.

Let the car warm up before using the available revs. Let the car run in with 500 gentle miles, then from then on drive it like you stole it. This is a proven method on the site and cars with this method of running in are known to gain a few BHP at rolling road days.
