Anyone know any good insurance companies for 18 year olds on a vrs

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

As I will be getting a vrs tdi i have a slight problem and that's with the insurance, i can afford the car but the cheapest insurance i've found with me as a second driver is £4,000 and my dad as main driver as he had 15 years NCB. Do you guys know any good places to look for insurance, as if i cant get insured I may have to get the vectra 1.9 cdti as it's 2k insurance on that, but the vrs is only another 3k more. I defo want the vrs tdi 170 but need some good insurance places, quinn and directline are unable to quote and kwik-fit came as the cheapest through on one of the compare the market websites.

Help would be appreciated if you guys know of anyone.

Thanks.

hey im 19 and with no ncb using what i found to be the cheapest (ecar) i was quoted 4 grand! i dont think there is an easy way although with one years NCB its 1800 quid?

Is that with you as main driver then ?

Thanks.

I always find Admiral group are cheaper for young drivers - that includes Elephant, Bell and Admiral themselves.

I would try Virgin insurance as well. They were the cheapest for my 17 year old brother although that was still £2k on a Ford KA third party but cheaper than price comparisons which were around £5k and one was £10k. I think there is a cartel on young driver insurance. I would defo put yourself as the main driver as it saves problems if you have an accident plus you get to build your no claims which should bring your premium down next year. Also pass plus can help a bit.

There is no good insurance for 18 year olds on a "performance" car

Buy a 1.2 Polo and have done with it!

Try Adrian Flux. They will probably still be a fair price but at least they wont treat you like you have the plague!!

Try putting yourself as the main driver and your dad as a second driver, or better still your mum . At least your no claims will start to build.

Also steer clear of any alloys, suspension , bodywork and re-map mods . Insurance companies are not idiots and are quick to withdraw cover if you are too "economic" with the truth in your diclosure. Sure you can get cover with "performance and cosmetic non factory extras but the price goes through the roof for a youg person. I know,, my son is in the same boat!!

Good luck.

i can afford the car but the cheapest insurance i've found with me as a second driver is £4,000 and my dad as main driver as he had 15 years NCB.

I would look at this from a different angle. If you cannot afford all the expense that comes with any car then you cannot afford the car.

Sorry to put a downer on it, but this is a simple case of economic miscalculation.

I would also add that in my opinion no car is worth >10% of it's value to insure.

The whole Polo 1.2 idea is sound, think of it as a loss leader. I had to do this when my A3 Quattro got written off - at 24 I was being quoted £1800 to insure a ford Ka and only £2200 to insure an Elise. I ended up running a 1.2 Polo for 3 years (which i got 12mo free insurance on) and including the 'inherited' 4 years NCD from VW (it was clearly stated on the cover note they provided me that I had 4 years NCD) and the 2 years of my own insurance I then had 6 years NCD after only 3 years of pootling around in a Polo.

So then I bought a 325i.

I would look at this from a different angle. If you cannot afford all the expense that comes with any car then you cannot afford the car.

Very wise words!

The same being I can afford to finance an R8, but I then couldn't afford my rent, or food

But.... but.... you can sleep in a car, but you cannot drive a house.

I've tried telling SWMBO that!

Hmm im going to have a look into i got insured on my first car for 1300 on a vectra 1.8 sri 130bhp

'i can afford the car'

No you can't, the running costs are part of it. Start with a modest and standard car rather than blowing all your ? hard earned cash.

Must be good times for youth employment somewhere in the UK - or is it on the 'grey economy'?

Don't forget, you're not just insuring the car - your main insurance risk is the third party. My son ended up getting a brand new Citroen C2 because his total monthly outgoings with a brand new C2 + insurance was marginally more than just getting insurance for a tatty second hand Fiat.

Whose car is it? Yours, or your dad's?

When I was 18 I was driving a £500 Rover 214Si...

Unless you've already spent a lot of time driving powerful cars or want to do a lot of track days the VRS will be a waste as a first car as well as a big risk for any insurer (The purpose of quotes like that is not to give a cost for your insurance but more to tell you they don't want you on their books).

You're much better to start with a car you can easily afford to run and insure and build up a no claims that way as well as getting more driving experience. I've driven as a second driver on my dad's car for over a decade (It made no sense for me to buy a car as well since he needed it for commuting to work weekdays while I needed it to carry bikes around the country for spins/races on evenings and weekends). When my dad retired and I bought my own car I got quotes up to €3000 for insurance on a 1.9 PD Octy. I ended up paying €595 for my first policy with a decade of named driver experience after shopping around (But I am 30 years old and Irish insurers specialise in ripping their customers off - to the degree that they were up to 100 times as profitable in Ireland as in the UK a few years back before the government pressured them to cop on). Your first insurance will always tend to be disproportionately high without a driving history anyway. Just be glad you're not in Ireland though - at 18 you're lucky to get a quote under €5000 if the car you have is anywhere over a 1.2L...

I'd like to see people charged the average premium for that vehicle for their first insurance and then have it either rise or fall depending on their claims, but that would be a lot less profitable...

Car insurance is one of those expenses that really doesn't make too much sense from a regulatory point of view though. The government makes a law saying you must get insurance to legally drive, but then lets a cartel of private companies dictate costs in line with their fundamental aim of making as much profit as possible.

I haven't yet bought the car but was looking to purchase in august tim

OK, so just rework the spreadsheet, factoring in insurance and add a sheet to cover yr/yr recurring costs and then figure out /when/ you can actually afford to buy and run it on an ongoing basis.

But remember - there is more to life than a car and I have personally never noticed a positive correlation between anything else I wanted in life and driving a fast car.

i feel like slitting my wrists after reading some of these posts - he asked if anyone knew of a good insurance company as his quote was high not to be told by someone else who doesn't know his financial circumstances that he can't afford it or should get a crap car - If hes a young driver (which we dont know as he hasn't said) let him do what he wants. I was the same as him at 20 i wanted an escort RS turbo or golf 16v at that age but my insurance quote was £4k for both, my mate had a clio sport 182 when he was 19 and paid over £3k insurance - so whats the problem with him having the car HE wants. He said "Do you guys know any good places to look for insurance"

I bought my car in 2006 when I as 19. It's a 2.0TFSI vRS.

Back then I paid £2350 fully comp in my name with my mother as a named driver. At the time I had 0 NCB

After checking various insurance qoutes Ive managed to get insurance on the vrs tdi for £1750 with me as second driver fully comp, so i no im able to do it. Im going to do it for a year or so then put myself as main driver and build up NCB.

If you have a major accident and it turns out you are in reality the main driver, then your insurance will be invalid.

The car needs to be owned by and registered in the name of the main driver.

Yup, this is true!

Indeed. If the V5 is in your name and the insurance is in your Fathers it may be even harder to argue that you truly were a second driver.
