Increasing castor, with offset bushes

Featured Replies

Hi,

There are a couple of bush kit's around which increase the castor on the suspension, one kit is also called anti lift kit.

has anyone fitted these? Would like to hear thought's from people who have them.

thanks

are you sure you mean "castor" and not camber ?

the only way i could think of you being able to adjust either of them is with adjustable shocker top mounts

You can get offset console bushes which move the back of the wishbone down and therefore increase the caster angle. The effect of this is the increase the amount of dynamic camber (the negative camber in corners) and slightly increase the vertical compliance of the front suspension (so it becomes slightly softer). The upshot of all this is a slight improvement in straight line traction, slightly more front end grip in corners, slightly heavier steering and a bit more self-centering action from the steering and little more pitch/dive on braking and acceleration. Like everything concerned with suspension, its trade-offs and compromises. Personally I wouldn't bother.

I have a Whitline Anti-Lift Kit (aka WALK) on my Octavia. Subtle but useful improvement in both cornering and more importantly -less wheelspin. However I dont know whether it would have the same useful effect on the lighter and shorter Fabia. Personally I found the Jabba Rear ARB mod did far more for the handling than anything else and I would install that instead of a WALK on a Fabia. With a rear ARB on the Fabia, you dont need more front end grip as the backend slides on lift-off much more readily than my Octvia which has uprated Rear ARB too.

I have put solid front bushes on as well (common Fabia mod) which firms up the steering nicely. Some people put a front upper (SEAT) strut on too, but its effect is small compared with that of the RARB and Cupra rear wishbone (front suspension) bushes combined.

You can get offset console bushes which move the back of the wishbone down and therefore increase the caster angle. .

can you link me these bushes, so i can have look please

I have the Superpro anti lift bushes fitted to my Fabia VRS last April by Jabbasport. They are really good and I improved the way the car handles no end. I have had no issues with tyre wear or anything. I wrote a review a while back and have copied it in below for you.

Cheers Matt

I went to Jabbasport today to get the bushes installed. The job did not take long including the wheel alignment. Which I was very pleased with! Nick printed me a graph of the overall setup and both the front and back were within tolerance. Nick mentioned that most fabia rear beams are slightly out and mine was one of the few that he had seen that is straight.

But that aside, my test drive in the car after the bushes were fitted. Well the transformation of the handling is unbelievable! It reminded very much of the steering feeling I had in my Focus RS. We all know how well they were set up so to say that I was pleased by the way this car handles is an understatement!

The steering is more direct and you can really feel what the front wheels are doing. There is no vagueness in the steering anymore. Acceleration and braking is improved too. There is no twitching from side to side anymore. The car stays in the direction you point it! The overall front end is firmer but there is no increase in vibration being transferred through to the cabin. Plus the front end doesnt lift like it used to. You can feel the car is more poised and remains virtually flat when doing anything really. You have really got to drive the car to believe how much difference 4 bushes have made to the handling! I have only covered 60 miles since having them fitted and most of them have been in a straight line, But when you get to some twisty roads, they really give you the :D factor!

I do not know how they compare to normal cupra bushes. All I know is that they work and are well worth the investment!

The only draw back to the bushes that I can see is increased tyre wear and a decrease in my mpg:rolleyes:

I would just like to say a big  to Nick and his team at Jabbasport for sorting my car. They really are down to earth people, who know what they are talking about and nothing is too much trouble for them. So thanks again!

Here is a link to the bushes.

Superpro version

I thought i found a whiteline version for this chassis too, but can't find it at the moment.

I already have KW's and a Jabbasport RARB,

From the research i have done there are not mnay downside's to inreasing the castor.

But would like to hear from people using the bushes.

Bushes are due to be changed anyway.

Cheers

The front end actually becomes softer with the addition of more caster, so pitching of the car on braking and acceleration is greater. The term 'anti-lift' is incorrect really. It is the softening of the front suspension which increases traction. You want to move the back of the wishbone (the rear pivot) downwards and outwards slightly, so fit the offset bushes with the hole at about the 7 or 8 O'clock position on the N/S and the 4 or 5 O'clock position on the O/S (viewed from the read of the bush). You will need the front toe setting adjusted after you have fitted the bushes.

A full technical explanation of how anti-dive/anti-lift operates, and the effect of an anti-lift kit is given here:

Have these in stock on the shelf if anyone's interested.

Fitted these to my fabia the other week (between xmas and new year). It's nice to have a fabia that drives straight again instead of pulling to the left like so many do..

Thanks guys, Just the info and write up i was after. Make the front end a little softer, will please my passangers.

It's made my mind up.

Would be interesting to do a back to back with a set of normal polybushes, But I'm not going to buy and swap two sets.

Thanks

I think my MOT tester, must have read this post.

My car failed on these bushes today, Was hoping the rubber one's would last a bit longer.

So I'll be doing this asap, and let you know how i get on.

Really good, thanks. Are you using one now?

Fitted straight on, had no problems with oil starvation etc. And there is plenty of clearance. Been fitted for around 4000mile's

Only down side, i had to remove the oil level sensor.

I check the level oftern so this isn't a problem, but it does put up a warning light as you trun the ignition on.

I stripped down the old sensor, and I wanted to monitor it's output, so maybe something could be made to stop the warning. But I broke it before getting this far.

I have heard the clocks can be re-programed without the oil level warning, It's on the list of things to do.

Im not running one but have been very tempted.

Ive heard that the oil level sensor can be programmed out.

I have no idea how to do that

Does anyone have the part number of these, would be interested to stick one on my furby..

Sump - 06A 103 601T

Pick up - 06A 115 251G

That's the same sump. Only more expensive.

Buy it from vag with the above part numbers for under £100

  • 1 year later...

How much feedback do these bushes give to the steering?

Do they get rid of the dull lifeless steering the car has?
