Surround Sound Query

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have a SA-HT520 Panasonic surround sound unit from 2004/5. It's been faultless up until now, so not bad going IMO.

Anyway, usually when it's powered up, it clicks (sounds like a relay) and it makes the same noise when shutting down. When it's clicked when shutting down I turn it off at the wall (all AV stuff is on a surge protector).

Anyway, now when the power is turned on at the wall, the unit clicks, displays a series of dashes on it's LCD, then clicks again, powering off, which it never used to do. If I turn it back on, it works fine, but resets everything such as source, volume, EQ etc.

I think that I may have shut power off too soon last time it was used, but this has happened a couple of times in the past and never caused an issue.

I have googled it, but there's nothing on there for something so old, so was wondering if anyone on here had an idea as to how to stop it?

Thanks in advance,

Joe.

I don't know these units myself, but it sounds as though whatever method it uses to store the presets (possibly battery backed memory) isn't working, so when you switch on at the wall, it thinks it's being turned on for the first time.

I would guess that there's a small battery somewhere that's failed, like a PC BIOS battery.

Of course, I could be talking total carp. Someone else who has a blithering clue might be along shortly.....

Thanks for replying. Thats what both me and my dad suspected - some sort of BIOS battery that's died. I've emailed Panasonic themselves, so will see what they say if they ever reply and go from there. Will most likely open it up and see what's what.

THanks, Joe

A few folks have asked the same question online, so you're not alone, it seems.

Have they?! I did a google search and posted on Yahoo answers but niether of those found anything. Shall have to try again!

Don't suppose you remember if any of them found a solution do you?

Thanks, Joe

*Edit* Used it earlier and it seems to have fixed itself, so not complaining.

Panasonic Audio not my realm ,but Panasonic Tech Support ( on the telecomms side anyway) is excellent -alwaysfound them top notch .If their audio kit is anything like their telecommsstuff ,will have a battery backup for memory -can't remember the average age before failure (never had to change one,but think it was mentioned on a course,so Pan Tech Support will know)(but those were rechargeable ones).

Thinking out loud -

If the battery turns out to be about same diameter as AAA and roughly that width ,with a pair of wires terminated in a plug ,try finding a Panasonic main dealer -most telecomms ones should keep them in stock .

The one I described is fitted in most Panasonic KXT/KXTD sytems .
