Alarm question

Featured Replies

In this sort of weather when SWMBO is off to work I leave her car running on the drive for 10 minutes to warm up. Because of the ice she is using my 4x4, which is a problem. Her car I can lock while it is runiing, but I cannot find a way to lock the Octy, without setting at least part of the alarm system.

Anyone know if this can be done, please??

I've been using the spare key and manually locking the car the old fashioned way, remember that, when we actually put the key into the door and turn it :giggle:

Not sure what that does to the alarm, but I've not had it go off. I'd guess the alarm cannot be set when the engine is running, much the same as the remote locking won't work with the engine running.

As someone who works in car insurance I must advise against this.

IF YOUR CAR IS STOLEN WHILST THE KEYS ARE IN THE IGNITION. THE ASSESSOR WILL REFUSE YOUR CLAIM

What if you were car jacked? Same scenario really!

As in, there I was scraping the windows whilst my car was warming up and somone pushed me over from behind, jumped into the car and drove off. :'(

Sorry, to qualify - this applies when the car is left unattended with the keys in the ignition, a carjack is where you are removed from the car by force and the car taken. Definitely not the same and the insurance company will take this view.

Okey dokey :)

Thanks, Milnei. I'm just too stupid to have tried it with the engine running, just tried locking it different ways!!

Yup, bro-in-law works in the police and the number of cars stolen this week by people leaving cars running, locked or not was 50 yesterday. And when told the crime ref number wont help as insurance co wont pay up, people arent pleased with the coppers breaking the news and a complaint is usually filed.

Technically even being next to it is likely to lead to a claim refusal. Technically, I've always been told by coppers and sister who worked in insurance in the past, you should clear windows, THEN start the car and remain in the seat.

Also remember it is actually an offence to leave a running car unattended.

Clear, then start? Fine in a normal icy morning. in the current conditions it would ice up again before you could drive off!

Not sure if it is illegal to leave it running on your own drive. Living, as I do, in a small cul-de-sac, where Police never go, I'll take the chancce!!

On private land, no. On a public road, yes. The legal term is "Quittng" and worthy of a non-endorsable FPN.

There are other risks though http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/berkshire/7760492.stm
