Well it is a vw dealer, does any one know of ant other vw or skoda specialists in my area,

is that for the service (oil change, filters etc) or is it just water pump and cam belt/tensioners? if its just the one, thats on the very high side of prices (mine was £300 all in at a very good skoda dealership)

just cambelt and pump, what skoda dealer was it

Do you guys know if i can cancel the booking

It was faintree garage in bridgnorth, I think the one in shrewsbury quoted the same too but is about 20 miles further away from my house lol Is none particularly close by to me though

Canceling won't be an issue, maybe if it was on the day they'd be annoyed. If they ask why, tell em straight you've been quoted less elsewhere, never know they may match the price!

On there website it says they will match the price "We’ll match any like-for-like quote within our local area" http://www.windrush.co.uk/price-promise.shtml

So i told them i got a quote for £350 from an indy in my area . hes said he will do for £590. then i got him down to £500 and then £450, and he said that is the best i can do

I don't think he will come down any more.

Thanks for the help guys

Have any of you guys herd A.V.I.T in slough. I googled them and found this

Looks like good place but they are just too far. 80 miles from slough

Thanks tho

AMD Essex (next to Lakeside shopping centre and IKEA) have a cambelt AND waterpump fitted for £260 plus vat,

It's on their website too.

Not too far a drive around the m25 from slough mate

they are about 50 miles

Don't know if they have a courtesy car service, but they are next to lakeside and ikea, so u could probably do a few hours shopping/watch a movie etc, whilst they fix your car.

Had mine done at end of November by local Skoda main dealer:-

Renew Timing belt, Tensioners & Auxiliary belt, renew water pump and engine coolant:-

Labour £232.88 incl 15% VAT

Cambelt kit (includes tensioners/belt etc) £102.18 incl 15% VAT

Coolant £16.38 incl 15% VAT

Water pump £36.43 incl 15% VAT

Auxiliary belt £20.45 incl 15% VAT

Also had them change the brake fluid whilst it was in - £38.81 labour plus £15.94 worth of fluid, could have done the brake fluid myself but it was raining for weeks in November and was worth the extra £50 for the fluid change to stay dry!

So if I'd just done the belt it was £335 main dealer price which was reasonable in my view for the relative convenience and main dealer "comfort" factor. Labour rate is eye watering but still cheaper than the bang if it breaks.

Westover Skoda in Corfe Mullen, but if you are in Slough that's some distance. Heathrow is about 90 miles North East of me and Westover Skoda is about 7 miles West of here so you are looking at 100 mile trip each way.

If it was summer you could have a day at the beach but right now its minus 4 and covered in ice like most of the south!

Just thought the pricing might be interesting for comparison purposes.

Anyway hope it helps.

can i ask why are there big difference in pricing in different areas.

Every garage in my area want more that £400 for cambelt and water pump and about 40 or 50 mile away is under £300 WTF is going on, I think i should move houses

even though they are mostly indipendant some are part of a big area chain and so not to compete with each other price simerly

London "weighting".

Westover are a large multi franchise group with a number of major workshops locally, but salaries are low in semi-rural Dorset and Corfe Mullen is a very big sprawling village just to the West of Poole, business rates and overheads are much lower than they are near London and the showrooms less shiny. Consequently the business overheads are lower so the job can be done cheaper. People in the greater london are will accept higher costs and in general can pay for them whereas us local carrot crunching yokels have to trade ice cream or sheep to make ends meet so can't afford to support local business if its too expensive  . Simple as that really  .

If you look only at the fuel cost to travel the 200 miles round trip then its about £25, so if you are saving say £100 plus it's a personal value judgement how you see the 3-4 hours time lost travelling. The work will still take 2-3 hours or so wherever it's done.

I booked mine in for 8.30am on a Friday and it was done by 12.30pm, if you told them you needed it back in half a day then it'll be planned for that. They gave it a wash too.

I can do Heathrow in about 90 minutes during the daytime, but early morning it might be longer.

The work done for me has been fine so far, but obviously there's a big difference in a 40 minute 14 mile round trip if I need to go back, compared to what would be your 3 hour 200 miler!

I drive over 60miles each way to get my cars serviced at Awesome as I have a very good relationship with them and I know that they will take care of my car and keep me informed of what problems they find (if any).

I also find now that it makes for a good 1/2 day or full day out getting the car serviced and meeting friends.

Having met Ross (Unit 18) I wouldn't be put off by the 80mile drive as I'm sure it will turn into more than a service and you'll make new friends.

I think I paid £350 for my cambelt/waterpump/aux belt on my last pd130

Edited by matt@theforce

Another vote for Unit18, they did the cambelt on my Octy PD140, it was well worth the trek over to them for me, even factoring in the diesel cost and travel time I was still quids in compared to what a dealer wanted to charge me.

I had a long chat with Ross, and also got a chance to give my car the once over as I watched Ross do the work so I was sure what was being done was being done well as he explained each step and answered any questions I had as he was working.

my cambelt service is booked in thursday at AMD essex, cambelt and waterpump along with a full service cost me £500

Cheers for the help guys. Didn't get chance to call AmD today will give them a call monday and get it booked in for service.

Thanks again for the help
