Snow Chains.

Featured Replies

Can anyone give me some advice on which Snow Chains to buy please.

I've got the upgraded Sports Suspension & 17" Pallas Alloys on my Octavia Elegance (FL MY09) & am getting seriously p**ed off with getting stuck. :swear:

Cheers All!

I saw a post here the other day - try a search. Posters mentioned www.snowchains.co.uk

i had a look - seems they might be a good place to start?

Due to the sports suspension, I think chains will be a no no.

We have sports suspension, and when it snowed in Feb only couldnt get about the first day - and no one got up the hill, even 4x4's! That was the only day we got stuck.

To fit chain's you would need to change to a smaller rim & tyre as indicated in the owners manual. 205/55/R16 on a 6J 16 ET50 rim is the most common option and with winter tyres fitted chains would 99% of time be unnecessary.

Should be OK with sports suspension if you follow the options given in the manual.

socks all the way ;) Had the mx-5 out today and without them it wouldn't even move off the drive.

Might be lucky to find anywhere that still have them in stock!

I've been tempted myself, but just know that if I order them online, we'll be basking in glorious sunshine before they turn up!

I've ordered some (Autosocks to fit 205/55/16) from here last week:

http://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel4_tab.php/car-accessories/autosock_high_performance_size_620_one_pair_no_as620/njNA_v1i5Sq

. Their website states: "Unfortunately we are currently out of stock of this size. We have new stock arriving on Tuesday 12th or Wednesday 13th. It's "first come first served" so please order as normal; we'll charge on despatch but only e-mail you if we can't despatch next week."

I paid a total of £55 including £5.25 "next day" courier delivery. I am hopeful that they will arrive by this Friday - if not before. If the snow and ice have gone by then - well.... fine - I'll be ready for next time! But I expect it will still be slippery and difficult to get around next week end and after.

More likely than not double the price of motor factors etc. but you can get socks from your Skoda dealer.

I've seen the socks & I'm not sure about them because the route I use to work, some of the roads are still heavily coated in snow & ice, whilst others are just slush & the main A281 into Guildford is fine!

So I suspect I'd have to keep stopping to take them off & put them back on again & off again and so on.

Would be the same for chains, the conditions you describe are winter tyre territory.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to look for another set of wheels & tyres then.

I was looking for an easy, quick solution, where I wouldn't have to stop & changeover all of the time.

Just a final quick question.

What wheels should I be looking for?

I know this thread is a bit old but since the winter season is nearly upon us I have been looking for either snow chains or tyres and I found this linky

There's a thread about mytyres, and feedback is avoid at al costs.

I ran winter tyres and got up hills where 4x4 were stuck. I even had to stop and got going again with no fuss.

In terms of chains you'll need something like spikes spider or maggi track.

As for mytyres I and others I know have used them over 20 times and never had any issue at all. I'll use them again and just because one person had an issue does mean you should avoid them any more than any other tyre place.

One thing to be aware of is that Snow Chains are NOT strictly legal in the UK.

Information source: The AA

Please note that in any country, including UK, snowchains may only be used where there is sufficient snow covering to avoid any possibility of damaging the road surface.

Ditto, not legal in uk!

ABSOLUTE COBBLERS!

Sorry, but I had never used mytyres before but they were very responsive. They were the cheapest for winter tyres, they DID (contrary to some threads) take my credit card and they delivered within two days. I have no reason not to endorse them fully.

I didn't go with the combination offer. Instead, I just bought tyres from mytyres and bought 4 steelies from Skoda.
