my 1.6 is only doing 11 miles to the gallon round town?

Featured Replies

Been having this for a while, On a run it does 41 to the gallon but the min your in town it says its only doing 11 miles to the gallon, Its cost us £50 this week in fuel and only got us just short of 190 miles over the last week. I have spoke to someone at the nearest skoda dealer where they could not understand why it was doing so well on a run and so bad round town.

The only problem around town is that sometimes when you are parking the car will cut out then the engine just turns when you try and restart it (like its flooded) but they only way to get it going is to put your foot on the throttle pedal then it fires up but the revs are up and down then after about 5 seconds the revs are fine. The car does not smell rich and I have had someone put vag com on and there are no sensors reporting any faults.

11 MPG is no good and I am just stuck what to check, if the guy i got out knows how to use vagcom is there a way that he can see what the engine is doing if he drives it on the open road and then round town as i feel there will be somthing to be picked up here, all that he checked was that there was no fault codes, and no cracks in pipes etc.

What should this car be doing am I right in thinking it shouls at least be doing 28 around town to the gallon, Thanks again for any pointers on this as its costing us a fortune to do the school run lol

Possibly the coolant temperature sender is faulty and telling the ECU that the engine is cold all the time. This won't always throw up a fault code so VAG-com won't pick it up.

You may be able log the coolant temperature with VAG-com and see if the car thinks it is getting warm?

It is possible that the engine just isn't getting warmed up which will impact on your fuel consumption, although 11 mg does seem excessive. How long are the journeys?

Skoda dealers are unlikey to give you any pointers to faults and will generally deny the existance of common and well documented examples like leaky doors on Fabias, as will Skoda UK. They will want you to bring it in so that they can plug it in and charge you for the privilege.

26 / 28 mpg is about right for around town.

A friend had a similar problem on a 2 litre Golf, very poor fuel economy and no codes/warning lights showing, that turned out to be a faulty lambda probe.

I would settle for 20 gosh something is wrong here....The journeys around town are around 10 miles and the temp gauge seems to be sitting in the middle and isnt doing anything silly. Its just costing a bit of money now lol unless i have a 4.5 litre v8 disguised as a 1.6 sr engine.

How did he find out it was the lambda sensor mate, with there being no codes etc. Dont want to throw money at one sensor then another and end up getting nowhere. Cheers

11mpg?! Impressive! :D

Mine's been drinking recently too. The only way I can get 28-30 around town is a clear run with no jams and a light foot. Just recently it's been dropping to around 21-22 and when it does there's nothing you can do to drag it back up. Not every run, but enough of them to lose me 40-50 miles from a fill. Just been serviced as well with no fault codes showing.

I know for a 1.6 aswell who would of thought such an engine would be so good ;)

Thinking about it, his problem was with overall fuel consumption. The lambda probe comes into play when the managemant system is in closed loop mode, this is when the cat is at operating temperature and fuel enrichment is not required to a great extent. The temperature sensor has 4 pins, 2 for the gauge and 2 for the ECU, as with post #2, get the temperature readings checked.

Have you tried the "disconnect the MAF" trick?

Also, what sort of speed do you think you're managing around town?

What is the MAF trick mate, arond town i would say its just the usual 30-35mph, Will be intrested to hear more about the MAF trick though

Thanks.

To rule out the MAF sensor disconnect it to see if it make a diffence, if it doesnt its probaly that if it does then it could one or one of another things

will try it in the morning and let you know what happens, so the MAF sensor can play around with fuel consumption - cheers.

MAF trick already answered - Speed-wise I was talking about your average speed from engine on to engine off, not your Vmax.
