SD card in Octy II VRS

Featured Replies

Hi all

Im after your advice.

I copied some files from my Itunes onto my SD card, but when I slot the SD card into the Octy it just flags up SD card error. Any ideas/suggestions welcome?

Had a go with the SD card for the first time last night. I copied four albums over in MP3 format and they work fine (ripped from the original CDs).

Album, artist and track displayed on the 'stereo' screen, and on maxidot if you want it.

Not sure if you can use files from itunes.

Could be the file format - Itunes uses AAC which is an Apple format and not compatible with generic mp3 players. Try saving files as .mp3 to your SD card and see if that works.

Files need to be MP3 any bit rate from 92kbps - 320kbps. AAC, WAV etc won't play I am not sure about WMA files, but MP3s work fine of all bitrates.

SD card must be High-Capacity (SDHC).

My works super.

Format the SD card to FAT32 format for a start.

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you may find that you cannot do it as MS don't support FAT32 in these OS's so you may need to use a computer with Windows XP or older or find a bit of software that will allow you to do it.

If you buy music from Itunes it comes copy protected (DRM) either in protected AAC /m4p formats.

You can use a bit of software called Sound Taxi which will remove the DRM protection & convert it to MP3 format. The one drawback with Sound Taxi is it doesn't always convert it to a set bit rate, so use it to strip out the protection & save them again.

You can then import it back into Itunes as MP3, you open Itunes, Clear your existing library, Click on Edit-Preferences & then Import Settings.

Import Using: MP3 Encoder

Setting: Higher Quality 192kbps.

Click OK.

Import all of the music back into Itunes, it should then import them back in as MP3 files @ 192kbps, you can then use them as you wish.

Best thing of all is not to use Itunes in the first place, but buy them from Amazon or Play, which sell DRM Free MP3 tracks.

I've got vista and it allowed me to format using FAT32 came up as one of the format options. So you should be ok. I've only had one file that has come up with an error to which it gets skipped and the next track plays, will double check the file to see what it is that it does not like. Mine are all taken from a CD (oh which I own of course), ripped and then uploaded on a 1gb SD card.

The version of the file allocation table FAT (File Allocation Table) of the connected device must be FAT16 (< 2 GB) or FAT32 (> 2 GB).

Only MP3 data and unprotected WMA data can be read from the SD card. All other data is ignored.

This makes me happy I dont have it, whatever was wrong with sticking a cd in? At least you knew what was going to happen, I blame Bill Gates plan to take over the world!

For once it's not Microsoft, it's Apple making you use iTunes and their iPod for any music you buy from their iTunes store. It's an iPain in the iArse!

I ripped some music CDs on my computer to Windows Media Player, then ripped to 2GB Sd card, Windows Media Player converts files into WMA file and plays fine no problem.

But now iTunes purchases are DRM free (since some point in 2009), so that's one less problem - iTunes also enables easy (right-click) conversion to MP3.

CDs are fine if you only want a choice of 6 albums at any one time. Personally I'm too indecisive so enjoy having several thousand tracks to choose from. Wish I wasn't, as there is a definite pleasure in listening to whole albums.

SD cards don't have to be SDHC to work with Bolero by the way. In fact there's some doubt over certain types of SDHC cards.

SD card must be High-Capacity (SDHC).

Not correct. The Bolero works with both SD and SDHC cards.

I have found that the Bolero only like to have files one directory deep.

You can't have for example a directory called artist name then under that sub directories called album names that contain tracks.

The Mix function on the Bolero is also a little annoying. If you push mix whilst playing an album it randomly plays all the tracks on that album (assuming they are on one directory) then goes on to randomly play tracks from other directories. I resolved that by having one very short (30 second) mp3 in the root directory. While that is playing I push mix then I get random tracks until I push mix again to stop the function even if I turn the car on off and on in the mean time.

You haven't found the thread about the so called Mix function then?

I've tried re-encoding them & stripping the file structure all the way down to just having a folder called Music & filled with my entire music collection (2600 tracks), NO separate folders for Artistes or Albums & it still doesn't work.

In fact it's such a pain in the arse I'm giving serious consideration to buying a 2nd Ipod just for the car, so I CAN have my random selection.

what happens if you do this then?

It was to double check that all of the DRM was effectively removed from ALL of the tracks, I've since manually triple checked that all are clear of any DRM which could have prevented them from playing properly and they are clear, I've loaded them on to a 250Gb WD Passport drive and installed it into the car and it still doesn't make any difference.

It will start at a song & then go through the artistes alphabetically! It still won't mix them up. It's not much to bloody well ask for on a £19k car.

My Mix works perfectly now. I've been getting random songs non stop for about 4 days.

I was originally running a directory called "everything" that had a copy of each song in it plus directories for albums which meant duplication of each song. Since I put the short (30 second ring tone) mp3 into the root directory and started Mix from that everything works perfectly.

I now have a directory structure that looks like this;

\30 sec.mp3

\\Album one\songs

\\Album two\songs

\\Album three\songs

etc

I have found that the Bolero only like to have files one directory deep.

Yes you can - that's how I have mine setup: Artist->Albums->Tracks. However I have a 16GB SD card which I have almost filled, so the Bolero takes a while to read it when you want to select something to play. I'm going to delete half the stuff just to make it a bit faster!

I think what he might have been getting at is that it might be faster to scan if the directory structure is only one deep (although I've not tested that).

No my card (16GB Sandisk) just would not do anything when the directory was more than one layer deep. As soon as I converted to a flat file system it worked fine.

The speed that it starts up seems to be entirely dependent on the number of tracks. The more I add the slower it gets so I have just stayed around 4GB now. I also have another 4 GB or so on my iPhone that I can play through the MDI if I want plus 36GB or so on a click wheel iPod that won't work through the MDI but will through the 3.5mm audio jack.

An Ipod will work through an appropriate MDI cable, I know that it works perfectly even with 20Gb of music on it.

My stream mp3 and dension interface works just fine and with maxidot, track selection is dead easy. No ripping, copying and copying back, converting or anything just a simple download onto the player.

The one I am referring to is over 5 years old. It charges but the Stereo does not recognise it. The only iPods that work through the MDI are the newer USB ones, this one is a Firewire version.
