Coolant temp sensor keeps failing

Featured Replies

Hi, I know almost nothing about cars. I hope someone can help me.

I've got an 02 plate 1.4 mpi fabia. The engine management light came on a few weeks ago so I took it to the garage, they diagnosed it as a faulty coolant temperature sensor and they replaced it. About a week later the EM light come on again, took it to the garage, CTS faulty, replaced, EM light off. My EM light has just come on AGAIN.

The coolant temp guage hasn't moved from the left for a while, even before the most recent time the EM light came on. I thought maybe the cold weather was to blame. The needle did sit about halfway up for a little while after the EM came on, but now its back to the left.

Do I need to fork out even more money? If I ignore it will my car blow up?

I'm not sure what the problem is, but it's manifestly not the dashboard temperature sensor!

Does the car drive normally otherwise (heat from heater, similar tuel consumption to before the first EMS light...)?

could be a faulty thermostat, poss sticking open, this would cause the engine run cool, hence gauge not moving

The thermostat breaks up and comes into contact with the coolant temperature sensor, the code read comes up with an implausible signal from the sensor, so that gets replaced without any further investigation. The way to confirm this is to remove the sensor and look/feel where it came from. I saw one last week, we fitted a new thermostat assembly and when run the light was on and the gauge was not reading, as soon as the fault was cleared, the light went out and the gauge sprung into life.
