Engine idling problem - feels lumpy

Featured Replies

HI all

New Fabia 02 my 1.4 8v owner 48k on the clock

I've noticed when idling the engine has a lumpy tick over , is this right ? Doesn't surge just lumpy

Drives very well. No missfire or anything

Changed plugs and airfilter still the same

Any ideas?

Hi i have got a fabia on and 02 plate and i get the exact same thing, garage cant find anything wrong with the car, so now just think its how the car is, is your car an mpi or vrs etc

Its an mpi 8v

Goes well!!

Thanks

This is completely normal for a 8v MPI, mine has always done it. I've tried various things to reduce the lumpy-ness, such as replace CAM chain, throttle body clean etc. nothing seems to solve it. My GF refers to my car as 'the tractor' because of the noise it makes when at idle :-)

Yep owned my 1.4 MPI 8v Fabia since new, 51 plate and has the same problem! You'll just have to live with it.

"Goes well!!" Really? Im usually being overtaken by lorries

And i only get 40MPG max. with 16's on. Think the steelies might be making a come back soon.

I was also wondering about the lumpy idle on the 1.4 8v. I can feel the engine sort of send the occasional "shake" through the car almost like a misfire at idle. When driving it seems fine. I was wondering if these "shakes" were normal too? They're only slight I might add and I am sure the average driver wouldn't even detect them.

Yes , mine does it too , but only very slightly , its never bothered me really . Parker_Fabia , I get about 42 mpg max on a run with mine , about 36 in mixed town traffic. Ive never had a problem with mine on the open road either , I suppose I'm used to it now after almost 5 years , but I can keep up with the traffic wherever I go , it sits at 70 plus on the motorway no worries and has been known to shove bigger cars out of the way in the fast lane , on occasion. The engine seems to have a nice slug of low range torque which makes it easy to drive , not anything like a vRS obviously , but much better than I had expected.

Weird :)

I'm having the exact same problem with the same car and with the same milage.

I'm going to be selling mine in August of this year before I go to Uni and I'm a little worried it may put off a potential buyer.

Have since read elsewhere on forums, word is it has a lumpy idle as it is kept low in order to meet European emissions regulations. So it's more a designed in feature than a fault.

My 1.4 8v skoda has exactly the same problem/symptoms, I got the cam chain & oil filter & water pump replaced and it solved it abit, but it still has the low idle problem just not as lumpy, my mechanic told me it is an old engine, and there is nothing he can do.

I am now just learning to live with it.

But I do agree with anewman saying it is a designed in feature, to meet emmisions etc. as it has never cut out, and once I have my foot on the accelerator and driving, it drives like a new car
