Suspension question on 4x4

Featured Replies

I have searched and read lots of the FSD vs Coil-overs threads but I am looking for opinion on the 4x4 options available WITHOUT lowering much. I drive on a lot of cr4p roads and the front splitter and rear mudguards manage to ground at standard ride height. So when my shocks need replacing, which could be soon based on the creaking from the front going over the hump back bridge down the road, what are the options?

Are the Koni FSD's any good with standard springs? Or is it best to match them to the H&R's? what drop are the H&R available in? What are coilovers like if you set them at the maximum height? The Octavia 4x4 is already stiffer than most other cars I have driven and roll seemed much improved by going from the 16" Ride alloys to a set of 17" Spiders but I dont want to make it too stiff. (cue the smut :giggle: )

The FSD's willwork with standard springs but will make the car sit ever so slightly higher.

H&R offer a 40mm drop for the Octavia 1U 4x4.

Depending on what make coilovers you went for, with them set on the highest setting they should be fine for every day road use, just stick with a good brand.

What ever type of Koni you fit you can be assured of a huge improvement in ride and handling.

I thought the FSD's sounded a good idea as the car is not going to be used for track days, just that as the shocks sound like they are on the way out I need to start considering options. So has anyone out there tried FSD's with stock springs and what was the verdict?

Must be someone out there running FSD's on standard springs? Anyone?

Cant answer your question but would point out one thing worth checking. The rear springs on the Octy 4x4 had a habit of cracking so check yours before ordering new shocks as you may need springs as well. I ran KW's on my 4x4 but as with most changing their suspension I wanted it lower. Also get the suspension checked as the creaking may not be the shocks but bushes or dry rubbers. ( or spray everything with WD40, it wont cure it as WD40 only lasts a short while but if it stops its unlikely to be shocks so investigate further!)

I sold my old 4x4 with the stock springs in a box with the car. They had only done a few thousand miles, I think about 7 or 8. PM me if you want me to try & track down the guy who bought mine as odds are they are still sitting in the box
