Does the Haldex clutch work when reversing?

Featured Replies

Out of interest, when the Haldex sends some drive to the rear wheels does it have the ability to send different amounts of drive to each rear wheel or do both rear wheels get the same amount of power regardless of grip on each? I'm just trying to understand how clever the Haldex is.

Hi David,

Yes my Yeti as standard has 17" Dolomite rim's with in my case Goodyear Excellence 225/50 R17 94W. Found these to be very poor in cold and wintry conditions, compared to my previous Octavia I 4x4 & Golf V 4motion that ran on 205/55 R16 91V.

Switched to winters Christmas week after coming close to an accident trying to descend a hill road in fairly heavy snow at low speed; back over took front, engine cut out and we slid several yards backwards before coming to rest in a grass bank.

Rim's ordered through the dealer @ £147 for set (Yeti = 7J 16) and tyres from mytyres My link. Assembled and fitted locally for £30. Fully assembled tyre and rims are available from mytyres but at the time it worked out cheaper to get things separate.

VAG wheel bolts are designed to fit both VAG alloys an steel rims, so only need to change if you used non VAG parts maybe. Not sure if mytyres use official rims or third party. I know some look at ebay for second hand VAG steel rims.

Decided for me anyway new genuine parts was the way forward, and the Nokians were recommend to me and so far yes they are very good. Plus unlike from some manufactures they are available in the required minimum 94 load index.

TP

TP I've just been looking on etyres.co.uk using their tyre size change calculator and using a profile height of 55% on 16" rims gives a diameter change of -3.81%, they recommend a change of no more than +/- 2.5% which would make a profile of 60% on 16" rims better which gives a -0.76% change, this is at odds with the list. There is a much poorer choice with the larger profile and I can't find the 94 load index.

I too have an 07 Scout and can confirm that the rear wheels engage in reverse, I have deliberately put the car in deep snow of about 10 inches deep to test it and have had a very pleasing result as I got out every time with ease.

Need to stick with the manufactures recommendations and remember were talking winter tyres which are a 'short term' fit. 205/55 R16 is one of the more recommended winter sizes for modern cars particularly in the VAG empire.

The change of wheel size does effect your speedo reading and mileage recorder, both will over-read.

I knocked up a tyre guide for the Yeti My link obviously some of the info is not applicable to your car but there are some links which may be of interest.

All 4 wheels were firmly planted on the ground, I was reversing off an icy road onto a slightly raised piece of snow covered ground. Now that I think about it a bit more my original question is not correct because I remember that I also had great difficulty in driving forward out of this situation with my front wheels spinning and no drive from the rear wheels, I had to rock the car with gently throttle use to finally get moving. I was very disappointed in how the car performed.

I know that the Haldex clutch is working because on other occasions before and since I have felt the front wheels give a little slip then the rear wheels have gripped.

Hmmm, another guess then........ How about simple loss of traction on all 4 wheels because of ice/snow?

The only time I have had a problem was when I inadvertently "bellied" the car reversing into a junction and build up of snow underneath lifted the car sufficiently to break traction.

That was when the spade came in handy!

Just tried reversing up a muddy bank. 4x4 definitely works in reverse, very well, as evidenced by the fact that I made it home!

I just ordered up a set of steel 6J x 16H2 (same as my spare) from Skoda, will set me back £200 which is quite a bit more than you paid, I've also ordered a set of Vredestein Snowtrac 3 205/55 R16 91H which is the size fitted onto my spare - same as the chart.

Just hope they all arrive before Spring arrives!

Glad to here you have got sorted.

May have found an answer to the OP...

The Haldex clutch is automatically disengaged when braking (or when the handbrake is applied) so it doesn't interfere with the ESP and ABS. If the OP had a sticky brake, or the handbrake on a click (easily done) then 4x4 wouldn't work.

That could be a big problem off road.

Just found this on the Haldex Website regarding the new gen 4

1) Enhanced Vehicle Traction

* Torque transfer up to 2.400 Nm on prop shaft.

* Built-in torque transfer limitation.

* Full function in reverse.

* Instant activation independant of differential speed.

It would appear if you have a pre FL Scout or 4x4 (IIRC has the gen 2) then you only limited drive in reverse
