Flickering lights, dash board, interior lights and whining from front left of engine bay

my 01 1.4 mpi with 67k miles comfort has a relay annoying problem with the power flickering there is a wine in the frunt left of the engine bay as you look form the driver seat and all electrical systems seem to be effected buy the flickering head lights, inside lights, dash lights, door light and the wining form the behind the passenger headlight is in time with the flickering as well it seems to be getting worse

happens when siting still and some time at low revs it seems to effect the engines tick over in time with the flickering

some time there is none at all for 15 min and then it will come back on regardless of speed rev steering angel or road surface

i bought it only 2 days ago and am relay disappointed and relay want to try to put it right i live in Ireland and the cost of a new power steering unit form skoda is 800€ and the steering angel sensor is 80€

so id really like some advice on how to diagnose it fully as not to waste money on parts as im very broke

fi any one has a good resource to get cheaper parts than having to go to my main dealer would also be a great help

hi this is caused by the steering angle sensor being faulty usually, sometimes its the electric power steering unit that is faulty but you need to get it plugged into vagcom to check first.

is there any other potential issues that would be worth testing for

Was it a private or trade sale?

I'd also be wondering about the condition of the alternator...

could i remove say the fuse or power cable to the power steering pump and see if the issue stops some thing like that and if so can the car be use with out it for some time if it stop the issue.

how can i test the batrey

how can i test the alternator

can i removed the steering angle sensor to see if it stop the flickering and if so is this easily accessible
