Felicia thermostat 1.6

Featured Replies

Anyone know what temperature the thermostat is supposed to open at on a 1.6 mpi felicia? I've replace the thermostat twice, and it's still running cold. My thermostat says 87 degrees on it. Is this correct? If so, what the hell could be wrong with it for it always to be running cold? The temp gauge on the dashboard seems accurate as the radiator fan still kicks in at the right temperature, but I have to idle it for ages for it to reach halfway on the temp gauge. What the hell is wrong? Have I just bought two faulty thermostats by coincidence? I find that unlikely. It's ****ing me off.

more likely that the thermostat housing is broken tbh, there is like a little plasticy bit inside them that the thermostat bears against, and it snaps off, so effectively it allows coolant to bypass it all the time

No it's not that. That has happened to me before, but the effect is to close the output to the radiator, so it overheats. That part is still intact, having already been replaced.

tbh, it must be thermostat related because it's the only thing that regulates the temperature when the engine is at idle and you aren't moving.... does the heater get hot when you've run it up to temp??

Heater works fine. Not as hot as normal, but hot-ish. Just seems against the odds to buy two faulty thermostats consecutively. Do you happen to know if 87C is the right temp for the thermostat to switch on a 1.6 felly? I suppose I should test the thermostat that I've just removed, but I don't have a thermometer!

yeah, anywhere around 90ish degrees is good....you can test your thermostat by dumping in some boiling water from your kettle.

i've had a few problems with quinten hazell thermostats before, where they basically don't work at all after they open they just jam up solid.. which make is your one?

when you run the engine from cold you should be able to feel the radiator top hose gradually warming up and the bottom hose stays cold till the thermostat opens, if they both warm up at the same rate the thermostat is probably jammed

ok we have had this problem with some stats we fitted.. did you just fit the stat? not the complete housing

the stats have been changed slightly and are a bit too short to use in the origional housing so they never quite seal off the flow. i think the last batch were maybe hot climate ones and it was to stop the engine cooking in the event of a failure. if fitted as a complete housing they are usually ok , i have cured some by fitting a spacer behind them where they locate.

been a problem for around 2 years now with stock we had

other option is to cut the retaining tabs off that hold both halfs of the actual stat together so the it is sprung against the seal
