Grinding brakes - black line on brake disc?

Featured Replies

1. When breaking from slow speeds i can hear a grinding noise coming from my breaks, thereis also a black line around my front break disc(s) about an inch fromt the top of the disc right round the circumference of the disc.

2. Also there is a noise coming from the back breaks when i reverse?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Does the back brakes sound like mooing when reversing?

Mine does this, it's a common fault.

When were they last changed or checked? Are they due replacement?

Yeah they "moo" whrn reversing :)

Not sure to be honest got the car last year @ 32000 miles its got a FSH and theres no evidence of discs or pads. So probably time for set of discs and pads all round?

(1) Is this on both discs, or just the one? If it's on one, I think something has scored that disc.

(2) It's a well-known problem. There are modified rear pads available which should cure this.

But unfortunately doesn't

There is a VW fix but it ain't a cheap one. I'll see if I can find the thread

Same thing happened with mine this weekend! Went down a back lane covered in stones, mud and suddenly got massive grinding noises from the brakes! Drivers side disc scored so I guess somehow something got wedged between the disc and pads.

Rear pads just make noise no matter what I have tried!

I think the fix for the mooing is approx £110.

Joke really cos there was nothing wrong with my brakes until I had to change pads :dull:

£110 to fix the problem ill just turn the stereo up !!! Would the problem be fixed with new discs and pads or is it a problem with the calipers?

Great car otherwise

From what I remember reading somewhere it is a resonance thing.

Mine didn't start until I changed my rear pads and turning the stereo up doesn't really help lol.
