Don't be put off by these figures, they are good compared to most cars. This What Car application allows you to compare different cars on the same graph. The Skoda has lower depreciation than a VW Golf or BMW 1 series which is good going given their track record for residual value.

One thing that I would say is that the What Car values are usually a little optimistic compared to the trade guides. Reckon on 40-45% residual for the Yeti after three years / 30k and you won't be far away. However, if the reputation and desirability of the car keep increasing then the residuals may grow stronger (unless Skoda introduce a heavy discounting campaign as with their other cars).

About average in the first year.

and looks like a very good purchase for a 1 year old model, doesnt lose much on the elegance 140bhp after 1 year

I compared it with the Jaguar XK starting at £70000. The Yeti graph is almost flat when compared with the Jag.

Depreciation is only one factor. When I buy a new car, I make it mine in the sense that I will run the car for, at least, five years and often more. My criteria for a change is when the car starts costing money to keep going.

Once I had made the decision to replace the X-trail, choosing and buying the Yeti was a very positive experience and one which (up to date) I don't regret. In these circumstances, depreciation is not a relevant factor.

If depreciation is a factor, then always go for the cheapest model in the range. An Elegance will depreciate more in the first year compared to the SE and so on down to the 1.2 E.

Must admit - was a little surprised by the low 'guaranteed future value' figure in our finance package - 6k after 3 yrs and 45k miles.

But does it matter? Enjoy it for what it is, not for what it cost :)

Keep it for 10 or 12 years and it certainly doesn't matter !!!

Thats my aim this time

Compare it to the Ford Kuga if you want to feel better.

Compare it to the Ford Kuga if you want to feel better.

Isn't that reflective of the problem with these graphs - they plot down from original list ?

You might pay near to list for a 1-series, but nowhere near for a Kuga.

I'd have thought it wouldn't have been too difficult for WhatCar? to use their own "target price" as the starting point, but that wouldn't have been quite as sensational would it ?

That's part of the reason I've never considered them as a "proper" car magazine.

That depreciation is against list price, so if you've secured a discount it's not nearly as bad

I've just looked at the Tiguan 140 SE 4x4, when new costs approximately £3700 more than a equivalent Monster SE. Yet after 4years it's only worth £2000 more, so additional loss of £1700 :)

All academic anyway, when I sold my Golf it was worth £500 more than it had been six months earlier due to a shortage of used cars of that age, mileage and condition at that moment in time.

my grandad has always done this, he buys a brand new car and keeps it going till its dead really,

hes had 2 cars my whole life, a 1979 cavalier when i was born which he had from brand new, and he replaced it when it was scrap in 1991 for a brand new sierra, and thats still going.

Wonder how accurate it would be for a bmw 5 series with cloth upholstery, no satnav, and "doom blue" non-metallic paint !?

The lower initial price of the 1.2 was part of the reason I went for it over the 1.8.

But does it matter? Enjoy it for what it is, not for what it cost emoticon-0100-smile.gif

Fully agree !emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Don't trust WhatCar for used car valuations, they aren't the ones writing the cheques.

Hey, all cars depreciate like stones now...even the holy grail Porsche! Forget it, just get on and enjoy the thing, its life - and life just aint perfect

Losing around £10k in the first year makes that new car smell......more expensive.

Use your noggin and buy one 12 or 18 months old. Ok you might not get exactly the options you wanted, but you'd have to be crackers if you think 2 or 3 options are worth £10k to you.

Just think if you wait a year with your £22k or so....you could get a second hand Yeti, with an 18 month old Octy estate thrown on the deal!!!

Got to admit I do love it when people selectively pick out other motors of an entirely different market sector, to make themselves feel better about the depreciation. Porche Cayenne's, Jaguar XK's......why not go the whole hog and throw in a Bugati Veyron, or a super tanker (currently they lose about £40M on delivery).......LOL!

C'mon fellow Skoda drivers....show us that you've got more sense than money.....and not the other way round! :p

Just noticed on carpages What Car have supposedly give 3 awards to Skoda for best value, one of these to the Yeti 1.2TSI.

Although looking at the what Car site, the main award results seem to have far to many Peugeot's; didn't someone on the SMOC mention Specsavers

Oh they seem to think a 3008 is a Xover: where's the 4x4 option then? More a hatchback on steroids like the Golf Plus. :giggle:

Ah, but you are forgetting something! Isnt it Peugeot that gives you a slip control knob on the dashboard and implies you dont need four wheel drive when you have front wheel drive and this magical knob?!

Personally, Ive never even looked at depreciation. Without sounding like a spoilt brat I want the car I want with the options I want. I generally tick every option and own the car for 18 months to two years - Im a dealers dream but I drive a car that has all that I want on it so Im a happy driver. :)

A better way of looking at depreciation is to start from the maximum discounted price. It is no good looking at the top manufacturers list unless it is a BMW who do not appear to discount much anyway. I can not see the Yeti loosing £10,000 in its first year from its maximum discounted price. Some dealers want more for a used car than the discount houses are offering for new one. I think it is a little early to start worrying what your Yeti might be worth in X years because we do not yet know how popular it is or is gong to be. Then a better idea can be formulated. Most cars loose approximately 50% over 3 years. Even a good make will only just beat that while some prestige gas guzzlers will achieve worse.

I totaly agree, as I said, you can't take it with you (the money I mean). The Yeti is coming with me though!

IMHO I reckon Yeti's will be a popular used buy in three years time with strong demand. My reasons for this are as follows:

Initial supply has been quite slow, meaning that there won't be forecourts full of them in three years time.

Most have gone into private hands so there won't be huge fleet sales to depress prices.

The model has received a lot of positive press.

Skoda as a brand is becomming ever more popular and is seen as a descerning choice.

I've never yet sold a three year old car for less than the final payment (in most cases I got close to my initial deposit back after making the baloon payment) and I don't think the Yeti will be the first. Having said that, I didn't predict the banking crisis, so what do I know?

Edit: I should also add another reason for perhaps better than expected depreciation - I saw a BMW X1 on the road yesterday - I can only presume BMW had a YTS signing off designs the day the X1 was born. I know some people question the Yeti's appearance, but the X1 really is appalling dull and awkward looking (and I thought Bangle had left BMW !).
