quick resume, someone on the Digi Spy forum was having problems playing the Terminator salvation BD, so i said i would try mine and report back, well it seems to have killed my disc drive

basically i put the disc in, got to the TS screen with the usual options along the bottom, including one i hadn't seen before, BD Live, so clicked on that, had a little look round, nothing of interest, so exited, this is where the problems began,

sounded like the PS3 was trying to read the disc but was stuck in a loop, also just had a blank screen, bar the swirly background pattern, no XMB, although when you pressed buttons on the remote it sounded like it was moving across the XMB even though it wasn't visible, suspected the PS3 had crashed, so i turned the PS3 off with the remote, also had an error code, , but didn't make a note of it

having turned it back on, now the PS3 wont play any BD disc or any game, disc drive isn't even turning everything else seems ok, XMB there on the screen etc

so what has happened, anybody, this PS3 has hardly been used, this would have been just the 6th BD to have been played, and the only games i play are Burnout and Grid, and not that often, PS3 is 2 years old, and fully up to date on the firmware

Have you switched the PS3 off at the wall?

Current consoles never completely "turn off", unless you unplug them.

BD Live uses the internet to download additional content for the disk you are playing, on a normal bluray player it downloads the data to onboard memory or an externally connected USB stick. Maybe with the PS3 its not recognising the storage and attempted to format the HDD and failed.

Oh dear, that's not good!

Try a full reset if you're not getting anywhere. Clearly this will wipe everything, but if you have a backup you can restore this afterwards.

1. Power Off the PS3 via the power switch in back and power back on w/switch.

2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps.

3. Then go through the initial setup and then run a full Format via System > Format. (will take approx 3 1/1 hours). You may need to have our AV cables ready if you're using HDMI (in case HDMI isn’t detected after initial reset).

Good luck

there was a file downloaded, but i have deleted that just incase that was causing the problem

i think i may have done the wrong thing  i've set in motion a full system restore to default settings,

only 30 hours 42 minutes to go, its already been going for over 3 hours :(

thats outragous! PS3 ****e!

Think you have something wrong there.. i have done a complete system restore and it tooks a matter of minutes :p

The full format/restore process takes around 3hrs, that's my understanding anyway - following the steps I posted yesterday.

Do you did a full restore Ric, and it's still not sorted?

Bluray drive does naff all, it seems its a very common problem, especially after a certain time last year, some people saying it is to do with the Sony firmware upgrades, and as i did have some sort of software downloaded for the Terminator fillum and then the PS3 crashed, thats my thinking

i've just bought another dead PS3 off Ebay, i will strip that down and have a look before i strip mine, then i will get 2 disc drives and repair both

a lad at work is hopefully bringing another dead one in for me tomorrow, so could end up with 3 working PS3s :o

still a PITA though

fitted a new BD drive today, PS3 now fully working, happy days :)

Had the same with mine - MW2 is a laser killer too. May start buying faulty ones and start repairing them - piece of cake to be honest.

i'm thinking the same, but getting them cheap enough to make money on them is the hard part :(
