Figures are in Euro. Looks like we have both Norway and the Netherlands beat by a bit. The prices may chok you, but just wait till you see the income tax rates.

I think you will understand we the UK base discussions about discounting seems like small potatoes from here.

I am surprised that you guys living in expensive Europe do not come over to GB to buy your cars. So long as your within the EEC their should be no extra costs so far as VAT etc is concerned. Not sure abut non EEC countries I even think that by Law you should have no problem ordering a LHD vehicle here. Years ago, in the days when GB cars were very much more expensive than the EU I imported a car from Europe. I did not actually go and get it. The rules stated that RHD vehicles ust be available over their. At times the manufacturers put pressure on the dealers to play awkward. they tried the can not get RHD vehicles but it was challenged I understand. Which magazine ran booklets on how to buy in Europe and how to overcome the bureaucracy and to get everything correct.

It does appear that the tables have turned and that we British do not know how lucky we are. Mind you I did import a Swedish Army Volvo 6x6 and drove it back from northern Germany. I had more trouble flying out of the country getting up to date passports and endless security checks body frisks close questioning than I did driving back. I came back through the Chunnel. I stopped at security as you do. The man hardly took the effort to look up, just asked, "any one else inside" "no" That was it, I could have had it stacked with tons of drugs guns or aliens. GB is an absolute joke.

You are correct about the VAT. You can buy a car in another EU country and pay the local VAT. Ours is 25%. The problem is the EXCIZE tax. You would still need to pay this to get the car registered, and you cannot drive a foreign registered car.

25% VAT :wall::bandit: wow

Off to Stockholm on business for a couple of days next week.

Got £200 out.

Sounds like I might be able to afford a sandwich and a coffee each day !

Don't forget your long undies, woolly mittens and Teacozy hat.

Smart way to get to town from Arlanda is by train - twice as fast and half the price of a Taxi. If you need a place to get a decent beer, try the bar at Frey's Hotel. Not British, but Belgian - and lots of choices.

Thanks for the advice - I looked at a forecast for Arlanda yesterday - minus 6/7 this weekend (not too bad) - minus 16 on Moonday. Ah. Spare jumper then.

Gulp. "It's a 10 minute walk from the hotel to the offices...".

A 1 min taxi ride sounds preferable !

True, but when i enquired about LHD with a few garages i was told by Skoda (not Allams) that lhd will be much more expensive and deliveries will be very long and by a Toyota garage (for the Prius) that it is illegal for them to sell lhd toyotas!!!!!!!!!!!!

Years ago thousands went on the continent to buy their cars and there was even a dedicated magazine for that, but the reverse seems very difficult to do.

I am going to contact Allams next and see what they say.

I beleive that the manufacturers can not refuse to sell a LHD car in GB, just as they could not refuse in the past to sell RHD cars in the EU. As far as price, I am not sure I can remember that long ago but I would have thought that their must be something written in EU Law to guard against protectionism. Manufacturers will try it on just as they did in the past. We were fortunate years ago because the Consumer Magazine "Which" did so much to champion self importation of cars, so much to the extent of producing packages to help people in every way overcome some of the hurdles and obstructions that manufacturers put in the way.

It my be worth while for someone wanting to import the other way around to contact Which or perhaps their are consumer magazines in the EU that do the same. A solicitor/lawyer or expert in EU trade laws should be able to advise.

Hiring a lawyer/solicitor is dangerous to your wealth.

In GB we have "Citizens Advice" This is an agency that offers all sorts of free advice including legal. If it is specialist legal advice they can send you to a solicitor for free legal advice. This is not unlimited and is a timed session, I am not sure for what time period but it is usually sufficient to get a fair idea of the ground ahead. I agree lawyers are to avoided not doubt they are just as wealthy the World over. The information is most probably on the internet.

I think that What Car? magazine has a free helpline for motoring related legal advice.
