Featured Replies

Hi All

Just looking for some quick advice.

Need to change rear pads, i have bought some and i just wanted to know if you can do it without the winding tool?

NO , you would probably end up damaging the caliper piston , even using the correct tool the piston can be difficult and tight to screw in

Yes it is possible, but you need to turn the piston at the same time as pushing it back in to the caliper.

IMO it's really not worth the hassle, just get the tool - they are less than £20.

Halfords sell them, you will pay a couple of quid more for it there but at least you will have it in time.

The Laser part No. i have is 1314, they make several different ones with pin spacings to suit different caliper pistons.

Just make sure it fit's the B5 / B5.5 Passat (1996 - 2005) and you won't go far wrong.

(I have not used mine on my Superb yet - bit it was the correct one for the MKI Octavia and MK5 Golf)

I have a very similar wind tool to that I got from local motorfactors. The round disc is reversible with diffrent notches forvdifferent cars. Did the trick on mine in no time :) Just make sure you can get some kind of socket on the end of it because you aint gonnah be turning it by hand with that small handle on it

Thanks for all your responses

I managed to change the rear pads with the tool, without it, it would have been very very difficult and taken very very long, lol!

I did have some issues as my rear pads were really worn down that i could fit the tool on, so i had to wind it manually until i could get the tool on properely.

As it was my first time, is there anything else i should have done? do i need to bleed the brakes or anything???

Only thing I would check is your brake fluid level. I just did my fronts on Saturday (used that tool to push the fronts in as well, dead handy) My brake fluid overflowed as I pushed the pistons back in.

Get the right tool of course, if you have the chance. However, I have used a large F-clamp before (a basic version of this), to reset my Passat ones. Tightening the clamp, actually turns it at the same time, so it turns the piston! I don't recommend it over the proper tool, but it does work!

The Laser one at Halfords doesn't fit, I had that experience myself.
