Could a Scout tow a trailer and race car?

Featured Replies

An MX5 race/track car to be more precise.

I haven't got any of the above but always dream I might :D

a simple google search gave me the following:

Skoda Octavia Estate Scout 2.0 TDI PD Towing Limit (braked)1600 kg

Looks like the testing has started

1500Kg for the petrol.

Yes it Could, mx 5 is a smidge over 1000kg, if you turned it into a stripped out track machine maybe less, trailer wouldnt weigh 500kg

Other question is, did you pass your test before 97? if not you'd have to find a trailer whos theoretical capacity + its own weight + weight of the scout is less than 3500kg either that or take the test to tow above a gross train weight of 3500kg

Good point there. As I understand it, if you've got a post '97 licence you can tow a trailer if:

The trailer max gross weight </= the kerb/unladen weight of the car,

The gross car weight + gross trailer weight </= 3500kg.

Otherwise you have to take the B+E test.

My brother tows a 1 tonne bike trailer with a VW bora (v. similar chassis) 1.9tdi and that seems fine, so a scout should have no probs.

Unfortunately, I am old enough to have passed my test a few years before 97.

Well that is one small obstacle out of the way to getting a trailer and race car.

Now i just need 5 numbers and the bonus ball.

should it not give the maxium towing weight on the V5? Unless I've read it wrong that is.

I'm sure it would have no problem. A friend and I used to use an abused mega-mileage Octavia SLX TDi Estate to pull a Caterham plus spares and tools all over the country. A Scout would do the job brilliantly especially with the added power.

What is possible and what is legal is often two different things. Of course 1500kg only applies to a braked trailer. My old slx tdi, I used to borrow an Ifor Williams twin axle plant trailer and fill it with logs. Could have weight about 2.5 tonnes, pulled it ok sometimes stopping was a bit hairy.

Depends on the model - early Mk1 cars were about 960kg, later Mk1 ones with the 1.8 and leccie windows etc. were nearer 1060kg. I'd therefore bet most MX5 track cars, which are usually earlier Mk1's, will be about 875kg... so no problem whatsoever.

to be honest I only had a look at the book weights on parkers and went with the heaviest

And all the info is appreciated!

Now if we could organise a whip round to put the theory into practice, that would be much appreciated ;)
