More 80's VW Goodness!

Nah, 5 doors generally look crap unless done properly. My preference would always be 3-door :D

That's what I was inferring. You obviously don't get it.

:)

So expalin; just what are you trying to do?

I'm sorry, Anne, could you please repeat the question?

I am a 3 door fan, I have to say that having a mk1 GTi (There were a limited number of continental and special edition 5 doors) , but you cant get much more ubercool than an immaculate Swallowtail 5 door. :)

I'm sorry, Anne, could you please repeat the question?

What are you trying to achieve when you go for 2" stretch (eg 225s on 11" rims), real slam stance (tops ot arches lower than tops of tyres), etc, and **** up your suspension travel, ground clearance camber and castor angles in the process?

I dont like or 'get' for that matter mullet hair cuts, but if people want to do their hair that way then its up to them,

It's probably just the scene they are into.

Exactly!

My tyres are very lightly stretched (205/40's on 7inch wide wheels) just to improve arch clearance. The very tops of my tyres are in my arches and has low travel and ground clearance.

However, I do very few miles so can put up with the relative discomfort in exchange for the good handling and road holding.

My car is driven, and driven hard!

A 205 on a 7" rim isn't stretch as I understand the term; stretch only happens when the tyre width is less than the rim width (for a 205, that means at least an 8.5" rim). Slam plus good geometry I'm fine with; it's when you get excess negative camber to squeeze the top of the tread under a rolled and maybe pulled arch...

No, camber is fine on my car no excess tyre wear :)

It wasn't aimed at you personally; more at Performance VW's OEM+ feature cars and the like.

I'm fine with a well-modified motor, but not with one that's compromised looks, handling, ride and even raw grip just to squeeze an illusion of a wider track and tyre set than there's room for, doubly so if the fvckwit owner has put wider rear rims and tyres on an FWD car!

I don't like the over stretched look, I've seen tyres come of the rims over night so I don't trust them to hold!

I know what you mean, but its all about the style they are going for and as you say the illusion, it has little to do with them wanting to go faster round corners, its all about the scene, one of the things I find completley pointless in the scene is a trailer queen, that IMO is even more worthless than a car with enough rear camber it could drive along a wall.

For instance, very pretty, lots of attention to detail and lots of money spent just a complete waste of time

Engine now for sale too 2k without carbs, but never done a mile. :ohttp://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=77113

Why!? I mean, the carbs are probably scrap, and they won't suit anything else that isn't that sort of bright metallic blue anyway!

I don't like the over stretched look, I've seen tyres come of the rims over night so I don't trust them to hold!

Exactly. And worryingly, I know people who do run stretch on daily drivers, but being "kewel VW coupe owners", you can't tell them anything! ;)

There was a guy at Players running a big stretch who ripped his tyre off the rim on the way there, so it can happen. I wouldn't run more than a mild stretch on a daily.

It's not big, and it's not clever!

Yeah, it can be too much about the looks, but most 'scene' dubbers are more into performance and handling mods, and a few want it to look nice as well. You can have your cake and eat it. If you want to.

I used to go to GTI International on a regular basis. There were some seriously modified motors out there. As MOST VW Golfs are NA then there is a limit you can do with a basic engine to increase power output inless you drop a 1.8T unit in there. Fortunately the 1.8T does fit quite well in a MK2 Golf and gives some serious power to that chassis. A well sorted MK2 Golf with a good suspension set up is one seriously good handling car.

I've even seen a twin engined MK2 at GTI International. That was seriously quick down the 1/4 mile. Yet to hear of a twin engined Skoda? Any one working on a similar project?

The beauty of working on a proper Golf i.e. MK1 and MK2 is the sheer mechanical simplicity of it. There is so much you can get rid of to save weight and the car will still run. They have simple, strong engines. Reliable and simple electrics. Well thought out suspension etc etc. If you do get rid of a lot of the clutter it is easy to make it look nice as well as go fast.

Here is an example of enthusiast mental-ness: Mad Golf

(not the twin engined one i was referring to earlier but you get the picure!)

I'm not nick-named Golf-Fiend for nothing you know ;)

Never seen the twin engined Mk2 at inters, seen twin engined Mk3 and Mid engined Mk1 and 2's and the factory twin engined rocco.

I've pretty much been going to inters since I could drive and on my 13th Year of Mk1 GTi ownership and to be honest there is more than one 'scene' and one side of it seems very much more pompous than the other, some E38's for instance and Uk Vortex types think the sun shines from their 'scenetax' bbs, and I steer fairly well clear of all that, I like what I like and if someone else doesnt then thats tough, and I am not going to spend 2k on a set of radinox outers just to please the 'haters'.

I'm with BigW on this, the whole OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGBBSROXXORSOMGOMGLOLZ!!!!11111eleven brigade **** me right off!

It wasn't aimed you you personally BigW, incase that is what you thought I inferred.

If I recall it had a green body and two 16v engines NA in it. It was still work in progress and looked very rough still. Sounded awesome. It was the Inters at Wroughton nr Swindon 2001ish?

Sorry, I did not realise you were a BIG Golf fan too. I often miss my MK2 16V. Probably one of the best drivers cars I ever had. I put three different engines/cyl heads in that car myself. It was so easy to work on. With the Eibach coilies and uprated ARBs and NO PAS it handled like a race car. With the larger 2ltr block in it it went like a dream. Loved that kick or power at 5k rpm all the way to 7.5k  Got from Bath to Euston in central london in 1hr 45mins one night!! Oh the days before SPECS cameras.

BTW I was not into the show car scene. My car was normal - just very very very clean and detailed and shiney and lovely.

No offence or aimed shots taken

That was a factory one for pikes peaks, can imagine that was a bit of a scary thrill :D

Chuck some pics of your golf in since we are all having an 80's love in :D:D :giggle: ,

Love that car. Looks crazy. Looks like my son's Lego cars.

Odd that they have an inline engine at the fron instead of a transverse. I guess it was to get both engines to drive the same propshaft for 4WD?

Yeah, I'll try and dig some photos out of my old. it was a Monza Blue 3 door as well. I loved that colour. Had to get sensible when the ankle biters came along :'(

Hmmm... that's nice!

Some pics for you. Not stupidly lowered. Not stupidly big rims. Not stupidly stretched tyres. Not stupidly bling'd. Just a very clean nice car to drive.
