Anyone gone from a diesel (anything) to a 1.2 tsi?

Featured Replies

I'd love to see the 1.4 TSi in the Yeti.

I woudl see it fitting in the raneg as a petrol equivalent to the 140 CR diesel.

i.e. currently you have

110 CR = 1.2 TSi

140 CR = ????

170 CR = 1.8 TSi

To me there seems to be a gap for a mid range petrol version. The 1.4 TSi would fill the gap perfectly.

This should not turn into Diesel vs. Petrol, but I feel that the 1.8TSI in daily driving is equal to the 140 HP Diesel. It is not about 0-100 km/hr, but about torque where you need it in midrange. Thw 140 HP diesel really fits the Yeti very well. From the sales numbers, it seems like a lot of people also think the 1.2 Czech built TSI does. The 1.4 turbo plus supercharged may seem like a cute idea, but it has to be expensive as an engine - much more than the 1.8 and the 1.2 without supercharging.

My guess is that there will not be an intermediate petrol engine at all. The Yeti markets in continental Europe is most likely Diesel biased and the Eastern markets ( Russia, eastern EU. India, China) either diesel or low cost. The ozzies will go for power AND Diesel.

I was thinking more of the 1.4 TSi 122 bhp engine as in the Octavia rather than the 160 bhp turbo + supercharger version.

it is really difficult to guess what the Czechs will do. You could try to read The Good Soldier Švejk , by Jaroslav Hašek. It will give you a little insight.

Differentiation to other VAG companies may have something to do with it, and so may the buying from other VAG companies. The fact is that divisions of a large company have rules about transfer pricing, which tend to ensure the manufacturing arm a profit. Since the 1.2 TSI is built in a Skoda factory, guess what: They want to build the engines themselves. Since the line is rather new, it will take some time before any engine changes, but I would not be surprised to see a souped up version of the 1.2 a year from now.

My prsonal choice is a diesel. I have had very good performance of the 140 PD in the Octy and picked the 2.0 170 for the Yeti to get similar (or better ;) ) in the Yeti. That has been satisfied. The original choice for the Octy was based on economics, but the engine was simply such a delight to drive, that I am now a diesel convert. It is just so satifying to have the power where you need it - not 2000 rpm higher up. Finally, if I did not have some driving in Germany at speed, the 140 hp would be a logical choice here - Max legal speed is 130 km/hr and the 140 leaves plenty to exeed this in comfort. In "normal" acceleration, the 140 is also plenty - but the 170 kicks ass (arse in UK)

Incidentally, Diesel prices here are 10% lower than petrol and as fuel economy of the diesel is 20% better, there is an economic benefit if you drive 20-30,000 km/year as I do.

Things are more complicated in the UK as Diesel is more expensive than Unleaded, although not by much at the moment.

In my personal case it's a company car and the tax rules complicate the choice.

My last three cars have all been diesel but I really fancied trying a petrol again so I went for the 1.2 TSi. It would just be nice to if it had a touch more power.

Perhaps a 1.2 TSi with a Turbocharger and a Supercharger would be an option, it would certinaly be interesting.

A little remapping might do the trick
