New Skoda convert

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

Just recently I have been looking at changing my Leon Cupra R for something newer.

It just so happened that upon taking it to the dealers I noticed the Skoda garage next door.

After test driving both a diesel and petrol VRS I was amazed, not only at the car itself but the good value of purchasing a new one.

I basically have until the end of this week to take advantage of the VAT free offer.

At the moment I can see no reasons why I shouldnt buy one and I have pretty much opted for a Petrol hatchback version.

In addition I do have a few questions and issues that you guys may be able to help me with :-

1/ I noticed that people have mentioned getting the maxi-dot trip computer. What exactly is it ?

2/ Can you connect an IPOD directly to the stereo or does it need some sort of adapter kit ?

3/ I didnt get chance to have a listen to the 'bolero' stereo. Is it any good ?

4/ The choice of colour is still causing me to scratch my head.

I saw a couple in 'Race Blue metallic' and they looked very nice so that is currently my choice, however after looking through the forums peole have also mentioned the candy white or anthracite as

being good. I would like to see one in white to compare but I'm bothered about how dirty they get.

I'm also looking at the following additional options so far :-

Rear parking sensor

Spare Wheel

Auto dimming

Any help or advice would be most appreciated before I take the plunge into the world of Skoda.

Cheers.

I am waiting on my car being built but can answer some questions:

1.) The maxi dot allows you to control certain options from the DIS display menu so its not just a trip computer

2.) You can connect an Ipod on the standard fitting (you need a cable with 3.5mm stereo jack at each end) as I understand but can only control it from the bolero or other head-unit if you have the MDI option

3.) The bolero system is generally highly rated as OEM units go

4.) White, Anthracite, Red, Black and Blue are all popular. I havent seen any negatives on paint colours except black which always gets dirty.

Nearly everyone seems to agree that the parking sensor is worthwhile as is having a spare wheel but the tyre repair kits are quick and easy assuming you don't have a blow-out.

Good luck with your choice !

Ive just posted this morning on the same thing. If you have DSG Maxi dot is included as it is with Bluetooth. Trouble is you have to have DSG to have bluetooth so get the maxi dot either way.

www.drivethedeal.com have the best price

170CR with DSG

Met Grey

Heated Seats

Xenons

Spare Wheel

Auto Dim

£18400 or there abouts. over £1000 cheaper than the dealer.

Re: Colours:

Race Blue - is a v nice colour and a safe option (it's what I've gone for).

White - looks very nice too, but I wasn't brave enough - took one for a day's test drive from my local dealership, and loved the feeling of people thinking I was a police car down the motorway

Anthracite - doesn't do it for me

Black - a-ma-zing. But again, I wasn't bave enough - I got put off by the thought of having to work hard trying to keep it clean. But I am jealous of people who have it in black :)

Re: options

Spare wheel is a nobrainer for £50

Rear parking sensors is a good bet - this is probably the thing I'll regret not getting the most, seeing as I'm upsizing from an Ibiza

Xenons is another popular choice. Then leather seats to a lesser extent (I chose leather over Xenons) - there is a poll somewhere I started when deciding between the 2.

I'd like to know what you thought of the vRS compared to your Cupra R?

I have a blue petrol VRS and have to say i am well impressed, the maxi-dot is useful and i managed to get it for nowt as part of the deal i would have paid for it though. Spare wheel is a no brainer too and given enough hassle that was a freebie too (think it was the last thing on the list of things i wanted and a simple "for the sake of £50 yes i will walk and go to another deelers" that probably got me it again for nothing.

Rear dimming mirror i would have liked to have had but didnt think about it at the time and to be honest i am not really that bothered about it.

ON the colours of course blue is nice as thats what i went for its a matter of taste i guess, seen a white one and it doesnt do it for me altough its nice, anthrecite / black look good when clean and shiney but otherwise with a little bit of dirt look dull (only my opinion).

One colour i saw the other day that really surprised me is that someone near me has a Yellow FL one didnt like that older Mark 2 in yellow but the new Fl VRS does look good in it........ no way would i be brave enough to have one though and i'll stick with the blue.

I own an O2 FL estate since september, and I certainly miss the park sensors. My previous car (passat estate) was so easy to park, but this one isn't.

i have just bought a mint 07 blue petrol model and it is ace and i love the looks of the car in this shade of blue.:thumbup:

only thing i miss from my r26 f1 is the bluetooth phone connectivity , how have other vrs owners got around this , my wife has a parrot system in her car but i do not like them stuck on the dash or air vents very much . :(

Mine arrives on Friday, can't recommend heated seats enough, had them on my last 2 motors and am gutted when i drive my golf - still don't think they were even an option back then!! I've also ordered mdi, maxidot and the spare wheel. As for the deal I didn't look on the internet for a price but have paid the same money as the dtd price in the previous post, minus the xenons and auto dim (the price was minus the brochure prices for xenons and auto dim - sorry for the confusion). Dealers will move on the price with a bit of persuasion and patience.

My dealer knew i was ready to order and we're more than happy to do the deal, it's just a shame its taken 14 weeks to get here - roll on Friday.

I've had a fiscon unit fitted to my FL VRs, but unless you've upgraded to a Bolero or Columbus I'm not sure this would be any good for you... although the basic kit may work if you have maxidot in your car...

The parrot 9000 system doesn't have a display, just the controls and isn't a bad piece of kit though (and it comes with ipod connectivity)

My Leon is in black.

The thing with black cars is they do look amazing when youve just cleaned and polished them.

However you do have to keep on top of this and in this country they only stay clean for about an hour before it rains on it :)

It also seems to show up slight scratches when the sun shines on it (not so often then).

It was difficult to compare the VRS to the Cupra in a short test drive but it seems to have nearly as much power. I'd need to take

it down some country lanes to get an idea of the handling.

I've had the Cupra for 5 years and its been a great car but I now need something a little more practical (a new addition due soon)

It also costs a fair amount for parts and things are starting to mount up.

Basically if I hadnt of found a deal like the Skoda I probably would have stuck with the Leon for a bit longer.

Thanks for all the useful info so far.

Its given me some good ideas as to what to go for as extras.

I'm now opting for the following :-

Race Blue Metallic paint

Spare Wheel

Auto Dimming

Maxi-dot

Rear Parking Sensers

MDI (controlling the ipod from the head unit is something I had put in my current car and it makes things very easy. I wouldnt

do without it now. I will have to test the stereo properly before making my decision as I dont want to have to replace it when I

get the car, but for an additional £130 it seems like it would be worth it. Any thoughts ?)

I was tempted by the leather seats but I cant warrant paying an additional £700 for them.

This would also bring the heated seat option into play.

Likewise the Xenon headlights are a bit expensive.

Unless the dealer gives me a cheaper option on either of these for getting the other stuff......then I could be tempted.
