What?! I've used that much fuel alredy?!

Featured Replies

I have an 06 plate 1.2 fabia hatch, second hand. I used to be able to get about 4 weeks out of a full tank, just with driving to and from work and the occasional other trip. I filled it up on sunday with £20 worth of petrol, which brought the fuel gage to the mark above 1/2 (still can't understand that guage!). Between then and today I've managed to use from the mark above 1/2 to the mark below. I've never seen it go that fast before.

The thing is though, I haven't been doing hard accelerating or high speeds. In fact, I've been getting 40-43 MPG a day on Trip1 and 38.8 on Trip2 which makes it even more strange that so much fuel has gone. I use techniques like letting the car slow down naturally before approaching round abouts, avoiding hard acceleration, only breaking when necessary and avoiding high speeds to preserve as much fuel as possible, which is how I get a high MPG rating.

Any suggestions on what could be causing this, or is it me just noticing it much more?

i wish i could last a month haha a full tank in the vrs derv last three days haha

when was it last serviced? Notice any funny smells or irregualar engine activity, lumpy tickover etc?

Haha, I'll have to take that into consideration when I eventually get a vRS

Last service was November, before I got it from main dealer. A mate did say the other day that he used to get through a whole tank in a week, but then got the oil changed which seemed to fix the problem.

Oh yeah, and also, I always take it up the torque band (3200-500 rpm) before changing gears, which aids the fuel economy loads

Measuring your fuel consumption in terms of 'miles per twenty quid' or 'days per half a tank' is completely meaningless - the only way to compare fuel economy is by miles per gallon (or litres per 100km).

If you really want to know how much fuel your car is using you need to brim the tank, reset the trip meter and then brim the tank again once it's down to a quarter or so. Take a note of the miles you've done and teh amount of fuel you've used. Then you can calculate the fuel consumpion in miles per gallon.

You can't always take the cars computer at its word. Some are spot on, others can be way out. Same with the fuel gauge - typically I find my car sits near full for a while then slowly drops to half and then more rapidly drops down to a quarter.

Measure your cars fuel consumption properly and then come back to us with your figure and we'll be able to let you know if it sounds like you have a problem or not.

Totally agree with what Julie says - it's the only way to do it properly really and that way you can see what's happening

The cold weather may have affected it. My MK2 1.2 I can normally get to say between 45 - 50+ mpg on trip 1 with trip 2 saying about 48 over 25,000 on brim to brim its worked out about 45. However over the last few weeks this went down to just above 40mpg. try changing up just above 2000 rpm the engine seems to pull fine from here with the occasional blast up the rpm range you should get better mpg doing that.

I'm getting 55.4mpg in my vRS a tank still only lasts me 2 days lol mind i drive a lot

Hmm ... I've noticed mine seems to decrease more rapidly around the 1/2 mark than from the top, or around the bottom of the gauge (I mostly do the same trip every day, so it should be a fairly uniform rate of drop). Don't know if that helps any - as others have said, you're probably best working out your mpg over a full tank, as it will average out any extremes, etc.

My vRS has gone all funny on it's trip computer recently.

tells me I'm getting 45 - 47... which, I actually AM! It's not over estimating like normal.

It's a funny feeling when your confused by something working how it should!
