Fabia vRS uprated clutches

lol, this thread is 3 years old!

As for darksides own clutches, are you going to trust a company who sold used CG clutches after they were provided to them on the basis they were not to be sold to the public? I know I certainly wouldnt.

If your wanting to keep the quiet smoothness of the dmf then stick with it and just up rate the clutch, run a smooth map limiting the torque and drive it properly. (no booting it from 1500rpm in 6th)

If you want a more "sporty" or "hardcore" feel then go for a helix smf, yes it'll be a little louder and a little heavier but once you've driven it for 5 min it'll be fine. Revs move much quicker, feels great and the take up is no more jerky that standard once your use to the slightly heavier pedal. I've yet to head anything bad about helix, will cope with most power/abuse levels, option to up rate to a paddel clutch if your really want it hardcore.

never heard anything about this to tell you the truth, but other than that I've never heard a bad word about them so yeh I would trust them tbh.

Its all on here from CG themselves but fair play your a braver man than me!

Got a silent smf kit from awsome gti 2 years ago, running 200+bhp and its rated to 400 lbs ft of torque,I do 1500 miles a month and its brilliant, nice pedal, good bite and no horrible chatter at idle like a lot of the smf kits

Got a link?

If you listen to darkside its the clutches that were supplied by cg at fault

Guess we as the public will never know the whole truth

For me id never look past helix! Had 3 of them on various tuned pd motors and all were faultless and coped flawlessly with my heavy right foot

Its just typical trying to doubt the power of the car on 50p. I'm all for a little cost saving but you get to a point where it becomes counter productive. Dave buys his fabia and wants it lower and handle better. He buys some £200 joms. 12 months on they are ****** and fallen apart, he isnt keen on the ride but hey, £200 is a bargain so buys another set. Now he has spend £400 on coilovers and £300 on fitting in just over a year, while enduring awful ride. He could have got some half decent AP's for less than that and enjoyed the ride.

Dave then decides he wants more power. He goes to darkside, £1600 for 230bhp must be good! Cheap! So he buys it, has it fitted. 2 days later he realises as soon as he boots it for more than 30 seconds it goes into limp mode and gets massive heat soak. He then realises when he finally gets a -5 degree day to use the power it mullers the clutch after a couple of launches and spirited drives. Oh dear, but it was cheap! Until he realises a hybrid & decent map would have cost less for the same power. Fantastic.

He then goes to look for a new clutch. £900 for a helix?! Nooooo, thats far too much! I'll get a no name/techni**** for £300. a month later and oh dear . . . . .

You can build things on a budget yes, the ebay intercoolers while not looking quite as well fitted as the more expensive items do the job and save a few quid. There comes a point though when there is a limit to how cheap you can get things done before it just costs you more.

Bit of a rant there, not aimed at anyone, but it seems to be some people want something for nothing, not just here but people I speak to on the modding scene in general.

Well said

couldnt agree with you more on that one, I have no doubt the helix clutch is an awesome but of kit, but when there is something on the market that does the same job, it's been proven to be a good product and its cheaper, then I can't justify paying the extra money for something that is going to be doing the same. It's like the white line and Jabba ARB's, both do the same thing but is it worth paying the extra £60 or whatever it is these days, some people will say yes and some people will say no.

So what are we saying then? If money is no issue.

Helix or Sachs?

SMF or DMF?

I like a few others posting will be looking to update in the near future. I won't be doing any 1/4 mile drags, just some spirited driving. I will be getting a Shark remap also so I need to bare that in mind.

As I said before, totally depends on what you want from the car.

If you want ultimate performance, able to cope with santa pod thrashes, track days and constant hard drives with no issues at all then go for a Helix SMF kit. You will have to accept that performance will require a compromise, some loss of comfort, smoothness and quietness. In saying that, I drive mine with a smf as a daily and my Mrs does too, neither of us have issues with the slightly heavy clutch or need to be super smooth to pull away smoothly, I drove it round london with no issues in traffic. It's only at certain points you'll notice the SMF once moving, rolling along on/off the power is a little more jerky, but you can control that with the brakes/clutch. It has it's good points too. It'll take all you can throw at it and it feels more "sporty", drives nicer the revs fly up and down.

If you like your Fabia as it is now, quiet and smooth but just want some extra poke, put a Sachs uprated clutch & DMF on it and accept that you'll have to limit the map a little on the torque. It wont fall apart as soon as you boot it, but it wont like being launched like your going up the 1/4 mile too often and you'll need to make sure your in the right gear for what your doing, no 6th gear at 60mph and floor it it speed up, change down a bit and save the DMF. Driven properly, the DMF should last as long as you own the car, mapped correctly.

Personally, if you're on the fence just get a drive in one fitted with a SMF, anyone round Buckinghamshire I'm happy to take for a spin and I'm sure there are plenty here that will be up for the same.

Just fitted a Sachs organic and new dmf and can't fault it, mapped to 177/299, gear changes are a lot snappier and don't have to wait till 2500 to boot it now????

Its relative to the gear your in. If your in 5/6th chugging along at 1500rpm then change down before putting your foot down,it saves the DMF. 1/2/3 gears its not so much of a issue.
