Had my car chipped around half a year ago in cannock, and am getting gradually more and more slippage.

I've not actually uprated anything on my car yet, but am currently looking at better brakes (Mintex) and a better clutch. I've recently gone to my local performance garage and have been quoted the below:

Does it look a good quote, am I being offered the best option? Any help would be very much appreciated!

1. Fast road clutch, but you would have to be careful not to under or over clutch as it wouldn't last very long including fitting and vat the cost is £489.21

2. Cerametallic paddle clutch including fitting and vat the cost is £609.94

The price for mintex front pads and discs fitted including vat was £185.17.

We'd need to know more info on the clutch options you've been offered, brand and model and then see what they're rated to.

As a general rule, a uprated Sachs clutch with an organic plate works well with stage-1 and 2 cars. That was my experience anyway, and sticking with a standard DMF.

If I were you I'd also consider getting the car on a rolling road, to see what power you're putting out, and how it's mapped. If it's been done aggressively you're not really helping any of the mechanicals on the car, in the long run :)

Yep, include fitting (at a subaru specialist) think they charge 40 an hour. They also mentioned something about an on and off switch, but have no idea what that is?!!

Out of the two (I've not got the brands yet), which would be the better option? (Hoping you're going to say the cheaper!)

hard to say without knowing the makes and ratings.

I`m in the same position, been looking on CG Motorsport, seems to be some good deals on there.

Really need to know the ratings & what torque your car is producing. Then you can make a decision on which is going to handle the torque day in day out.

Also, with the paddle clutch, they are reknowned for being stiff to operate & have a harsh biting point. Although, I think some people say otherwise.

Steer clear of any paddle clutch if the cars being used day to day for normal driving, they are horrid! No slip, noisey, harsh and will burnout the flywheel by them time they are finished. Best thing I ever did with mine was throw it in the scrap bin on removal!

heard sachs clutches are quite good

I plan on going with a Sachs clutch and converting to single mass flywheel to eliminate the hassle of a DMF failure and also so i don't need to worry what torque the car runs

Those prices are good, but chances are the clutches quoted will not last long! The only clutches worth considering are those from a good branded manufacturer. It takes approx 4 hours to do the job, we personally recommend fitting a new concentric slave cylinder (CSC) at the same time. A Sachs clutch retails at over £600 and remember, you may need a new DMF at the same time so factor in another £350 for that.

We are offering Sachs clutches fitted at £800 inc VAT and a new genuine VAG CSC (release bearing)

If you want any other options such as solid flywheel option, Sachs/Helix or others please contact us.

Beware of cheap clutches, it is a big job to change ad there are many companies out there offering 'performance' or 'uprated' cluches that are ofter standard items painted or even inferior quality to the standard item

Well if i keep the car as i badly want back to petrol again!

I have one of the newer heavier SMF from Jabbasport (about 7kg instead of the DMF's 26kg!) The gearbox chatter is slightly less on this weight. I also have the Sachs sports clutch too. This setup takes a while to get use to, but if you want you can put yoiur foot down at any RPM and have no slippage - clutch will be a bit heavier than normal operation. But I prefer it! Oh and this kit cost me £911 or so from jabbasport!

Clutch and flywheel will be fitted by myself and my mate

I can get Sachs clutches for a heavy discounted price so depending on whether my mate can still get then and also what smf I can get It'll be done by the end of summer

I've found out what my car is apparently outputting (according to RapidRemap)

165hp and 260 - 265lb ft torque.

My local (Subaru) garage is recommending either:

I found a website VW Spares and it has Sachs clutches for £97 and release bearings for £28

So i think thats gonna be my port of call along with the new DMF i'm getting from Polo1600i

I'll be watching this as i will very soon be in the same boat. My clutch slipped today, bugger.

I will be getting a Shark remap before long (next couple of months) so i need a clutch that will handle the remap a bit better. Im not 100% on the difference between SMF and DMF. Ive converted quite a few from DMF to SMF for other people but never bothered asking why, never really noticed SMF being noisier. I also will be changing my gearbox while it's off as i have the long long box that does like 1800rpm at 70mph.

All in all i need a new box and new clutch but totally 100% unsure on what to get (smf or dmf) i sort of know the pro's and con's but how bad are the cons exactly. Is the harshness, vibration and noise really that bad.

are any of the SMF users getting judder when they pull away?

Darkside are releasing their own clutch kit in a few weeks and they said its going to be very affordable so hold your horses :)

As for darksides own clutches, are you going to trust a company who sold used CG clutches after they were provided to them on the basis they were not to be sold to the public? I know I certainly wouldnt.

If your wanting to keep the quiet smoothness of the dmf then stick with it and just up rate the clutch, run a smooth map limiting the torque and drive it properly. (no booting it from 1500rpm in 6th)

If you want a more "sporty" or "hardcore" feel then go for a helix smf, yes it'll be a little louder and a little heavier but once you've driven it for 5 min it'll be fine. Revs move much quicker, feels great and the take up is no more jerky that standard once your use to the slightly heavier pedal. I've yet to head anything bad about helix, will cope with most power/abuse levels, option to up rate to a paddel clutch if your really want it hardcore.

Any revomendations on the clutch if you want to keep it DMF. I only boot mide from 2-3.5k at the most. My car would never ever do 1.5k in 6th anyway, box is way to long for that. It'll only have 6th at 70mph. Hence me needing a short box. I like comfort and easy driving but want power when i need it. Im not a rally driver lol.

Sachs uprated clutch, the only online place I can find is jabbasport but I suspect you could get it cheaper elsewhere (maybe sachs direct?). I love my long gearbox!
