New Wipers

Featured Replies

Hey

I've had my VRS FL for nearly 5 months now and apart from replacing a tyre, things have been great. But since the snow, I've found that the wipers on the car now leaves lines on the windscreen as if they are worn out. I've tried cleaning it but it doesn't really improve much. Also, since new, there is some kind of polish on the screen that also doesn't come off even though I've used cutting agents trying to clean it.

I've been to Halfords for a new set of blades but according to their little book, the wipers for the MK2 Octavias are special order only. Is this because they use slightly different clips then the other VW/Audi group as they have the blades for them or is it the size? Also how much do you think Skoda would charge for a set?

If you're lucky you might get them in Tesco. but judging from other posts the dealers seem to be reasonable. The floppy wipers are not cheap though.

"I've tried cleaning it" - with what? I always use one of the foam cleaners you buy in accessory shops, and make an effort to not get car shampoo on the windscreen when I'm washing the car. You might also try precipitated chalk, which you're most likely to get from a real pharmacist, the sort of "family business" that's been there since Adam was a boy!

Cheers. I'll have a look at Wiperblades. They see quite cheap.

As for cleaning the screen, I can't remember the manufacturer but I did use the foam stuff with little effect and I don't normally use car shampoo on the screen unless its really dirty like its been after the salt and snow mixture.

I was also told to use methylated spirit to clean/smooth the blade edges. Is that recommended or will that totally screw it up???

I heard that a little vinegar on a cloth is fine for the wiper blades, just to cut through the grease and grime picked up by general driving. I don't know about meths but I can't see a problem with it tbh.

I've heard a spot of vinegar is good for cleaning the wiper blades...

Strange that the blades have not lasted very long, mine are still ok after all the cold weather.

I wouldn't recommend getting halfords own wipers blades as they are a bit flimsy. I have them just now

and although they perform ok, they can be a tad noisy in light rain.... Should have went for the Bosch !

I have been having the same problem, and general washing hasn't sorted it out.

When I first got the car, when using the wipers they always sounded very 'dry' as if the wiper rubber was old. I was tempted to bother the dealer about it, but have never got round to it.

Last time a bought a set of wipers from the dealer, I seem to remember that the price for the fronts was ok, but the rear one seemed expensive for what it is.

i priced the wiper blades up at my local dealers they wanted 30+vat, i found bosch ones on ebay cheap a few weeks back look through the posts and you will probably find it.

i always clean mine with neat washer fluid on a bit on kitchen roll, just rub it up and down the rubber both sides.

ive also treated them with 303 wiperblade treatment in the past and that brings them back to life.

Why not fit refills? you will need:

2 off 1K0955429A @ 4.92 + VAT each (VW part No. Skoda do not list wiper refills)

Edit: The price might be a bit more. The price above was from an invoice from early last year. :o

I'd also recommend this route, mine are still perfect (got mine 21 October 2008). Just be careful which tab you remove to fit. IIRC I posted pics before./ I also noticed some variation in part number but again iirc I posted numbers I used.
