Drinking oil & mayo under oil cap

Featured Replies

Had my car serviced at 29000 miles , 4 months ago and currenlty done 33000 . Its a 06 vrs petrol . Oil light came on topped up half a litre yesterday , No mayo . Checked today after 70 mile journey dipped stick and still quite dry . Put another litre in and cleaned yellow mayo type crud . Rang dealers and they said that this usage was normal and so was the yellow type mayo on the filler cap and neck type area in the cold weather . They said that a bit of moisture had probably got in and was nothing to worry about . Seemed like quite a bit of mayo type stuff around 2 table spoons worth .

Is 1.5 litre use normal in 4000 miles and had anyone else come accross the mayo crud ???

Used up all my spare oil where can I get some cheap vw oil . I think I'll need it

Cheers !!

Try Halfords for cheap oil :)

they deem 1 litre of oil every 600 miles to be acceptable, so technically 1.5 litres is well within that. Something is not right though, especially if its only just started. You may have a small leak, so have a good look around and under the car where its normally parked for signs of a leak.

mine has using 1 litre per 1000 miles over winter, but with no sludge.

try here for cheap oil

29K - same car/engine, 2000 miles after service it needed .6 litre and had lots of mayo. The mayo is the same as last winter. It will disappear if you go for a 150-200 mile run. This consumption appears normal and I wouldn't worry too much about it., it seems to me that it depends on your daily mileage and driving style. Cheezmonkai mentioned checking the oil breather pipes aren't blocked. Haven't found them yet but maybe no need.

1l every 7000 miles for me (28k, 07). I have had the mayo on occasion never had any problems because of it.

But oil consumption at that level would worry me no matter what they said.

Could you put some paper under the car at night and see if anything is dripping?

Using oil is normal (especially on the eary TFSI) as for mayo in the cap, yup, very common in the cold weather.... emoticon-0105-wink.gif

Yep mine uses more oil in winter too and also has the mayo. I put 1L in every 1200 miles in summer.

My 57 VRS with 26k (19k of which are in the last 12 months so not suffering lack of use) is using about 1L per 6k miles in mixed use. Interesting to read about the emulsification, have the same issue and no sign of coolant loss, will ask about that at next service but reasurred by the posts here and the fact I'm still under warranty till oct :)

Now the warmer weather has come . Well slightly warmer and more wet ... I have checked my car and over the past two weeks the emulsification has almost gone seems like back to normal again . So there we have it due to cold weather !!

Mine uses about half a litre every couple of months, which isn't bad. I also have the gunge present when I remove the filler cap. The underside of the cap also has condensation in it.

At the rate my car consumes oil I can get away with asking the garage to fill a 1 litre oil bottle I bring with me to the service to tide me over until the next year's service. It's probably the cheapest way to get oil for the car anyway - I wasn't charged for it at all last time, though that may have been because it was in for a timing belt...

when the oil light comes on its got hardley any oil in the engine,if this is the case its quite clear you have a problem or you dont look after your car,i check my oil every week so if i get a problem ill notice this right away

No problem with the car just seems a characteristic of the car over the winter to use more oil . Probably a lot due to the emulsification . Seems after research that this is more common on the earlier vrs engines . Please bear in mine the exceptionally cold wether we had down to around -7 or more during the cold spells that take an exceptional toll on the engine and the engine not warming up to temp.Usage of oil in warmer weather has gone right down .

Nice to see newbie that you check your oil every week but even still when an oil change is done by the dealers it is only filled to half way between the min and max on the dipstick . Believe me it doesn't take a lot for the oil light to come on when dropping to minimum . I always carry a bottle of oil around with me . Not had to do on any other cars however none of the other cars have been a highly tuned 200bhp petrol turbo .

Little bit presumptious to assume that the car is not looked after due to the oil light coming on once . The car is four years old and still looks and drives like new .So please feel free to continue to check your oil every week if it makes you feel better but believe me the car is so looked after my mrs says more than her ... :giggle:
