Insurance & Modifications

Everyone's postcode plays some part in the cost of their cover' date=' doesn't it?

IIRC, Jason (while we're making an example of him) paid a lot less to insure his modified 1.9TDi in rural Devon than I pay to insure my standard 1.6 in the ghetto of Rochdale...

Cheers Jon - that is true. If I'd been doing 40 mph, I'd have been overtaken by that car I overtook (safely) about a mile before the crash, for holding them 20mph below the limit.

Part of life however is living the mistake and learning from it, which I have. :) And I possibly live in an area of the lowest car crime in the UK - rated A+ or whatever, a big factor in LV perhaps insuring me?

I also can't say I was bursting to use all the newly released power of my car - It was nice to have it, but that day meant more to me than that. It was just an unfortunate turn of events to put a blot on eight years of 100% trouble free driving.

However' date=' William, if you drive into someone, they will sue your ar5e causing a massive payout from the insurance company. Jason totals his car by driving like a knob and the payout is limited to the value of his car. Simple really.

Yes but if he had broken his kneck they would have had to pay out damages to him and if you coming behind had crashed into him or also been forced off the road injuring yourself they would have had damages to pay out. Maybe not as much as if the accident had happened in Ulster, but very substantial all the same. I still think Jason (certainly as he was then) was a much greatyer risk to LVs profits than I would be. The biggest insurance claim I have ever made was

Unless insurers are going to start some sort of means testing for insurance, you've no choice but to put up with how they decide to price their services. (Unless you decide not to use a car, that is).

Some blanket assumptions are more "worthy" than others. Someone's age (especially if they're young or very elderly) can be a good indicator of their risk level, whereas the car they drive isn't. Saying all modified cars are going to be driven faster than standard ones is a joke. Modded car owners could take more pride in their cars and look after them. Uprated brakes could help avoid accidents... a remap could help you clear a potential accident.... etc.... etc....

As Jon said, using Jason as an example probably isn't doing you any favours... :)

Stimps Jason was prob not a graet example, but I see 20 something year old drivers driving like maniacs in modified super minis (Novas and Corsas etc) nearly every day. It offends me to think that LV would insure English examples of these ahead of somone like myself or my wife who does not drive a performance car and has never ever had any sort of accident/claim or conviction.

Yes, but the people driving the novas and corsas are going to be young (higher risk) and have little or no NCB (higher premiums for them), so will be paying more for their insurance than older drivers in the same area.

Are you saying that the cost of repairs (parts & labour) and any associated legal costs are the same in N. Ireland as in England? There must be a reason for the differences!

Are you sure you're not just getting the hump because your insurance costs more than it does for someone in England? :)

Factually incorrect.

They will not insure you under 25 on most cars and prefer 30+

Jason clearly got his cover as they felt his previous record, location and vehicle made him a low risk.

The fact that LV have continued to cover him suggests that they have a slightly more enlightened view than most insurers.

As for the bag of chips on your shoulder with regards to their refusal to insure N.I. drivers, tough luck, it's business.

They're in it for the money, if you want charity call Bob Geldof and ask him to organise a concert.

 They could call it "Insure the Irish"... :D

Yes but how many of them do you think have every mod listed? Direct Line doesn't insure anybody under 21/25 with mods and many insurance companies are the same. My guess is not many of these people you've seen are insured. Sure they might have 'insurance' but I would think that it would be null and void in the event of an accident! Do a spot check and I'd say 7/10 at least.

LV don't insure anybody in NI as a number of insurers. They weighed up the risks and decided not to bother. Even if they were forced to bother they would load premuims to reflect costs. If say you are a good NI driver on

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I'm seriously considering mods to my impending VW chariot......seemed relevant to review the topic from top to bottom.

Couldn't help but comment on this:
