DRL's and other road users

Featured Replies

I have been driving my Vrs for a week now and on two occasions I have been led to believe that some other road users are not big fans of the DRL's.

The first occasion I followed a fabia driver onto the A3 and he decided to put on his rear fog light on a bright sunny day.

The second time was slightly more dramatic with an on coming driver deciding to put his headlights on full beam and honking his horn.

Now I guess that they think that I am running with my front fogs on.

Anyone else suffered similar experiences?

I experienced exactly the same today - I was following some guy in a people carrier and he kept putting his rear fog light on - like you I think he thought I had my fog lights on - thought they would have been used to these things by now as all new Audis have the LED DRLs - I won't turn them off though as I've noticed fewer people pulling out on me !

Yep i was happily driving along when someone gave me the international sign for playing with myself.

Jealous git

My question is, What will these neanderthals do in five years time when 80% of cars will have them?

I've noticed some cars fitted with the "Halfords" type aftermarket DRLs so hopefully the DRLs won't seem too chavy like LED washerjets and the like. Don't forget in maxidot you can switch them off, I will during the summer. BTW, I am not too far from the A3 around Chessington area.

Its the same bunch of ill educated morons that always flash at people with xenons. Its always people that don't have whatever they are flashing at be it xenons or DRLs. Also known as 'Road Captains' trying to police the highways for us - cheers

Patronising ******, if he came up to me in a petrol station to talk about my headlights I would tell him where to go.

Aftermarket LED 'DRLs' stick out like a sore thumb compared to OE systems and just look cheap and tacky. I've seen several cars with these glued on the front somewhere, they just look w@nk.

They'll be law in 2012 anyway...

And the correct response is a polite middle finger, or window down and inform the person who's flashed/beeped at you that his mother engages in sexual congress in exchange for considerably small amounts of pocket change.

Austria have recently decided to go back on a law for DRLs and are considering making use of them illegal, because when they did a test run of making it a requirement for all motorists to drive with their headlights on, the number of accidents on their roads increased. Since they reversed this trial, the number of accidents has fallen back.

Excellent - not just me then.

They are becoming more common - but I think it is the location of them on the Octavia that causes the 'confusion' with fog lights.

I will have to come up with a suitable response.

m0bov - I am just outside Leatherhead so may well see you around.

I suppose if someone in front of you puts there rear fog's on, because they are confusing your DRL's for front fog's, you could add to their confusion by then turning your front fog's on !

Seems like there's a few of us around! I'm just outside Dorking :)

And flash your main beams, and put your hazards on!

Should just have a button marked "disco"

i think part of the problem is the octy has them below bumper line. my A5 has them built into the head light and alot longer son not realy able to be confused as fogs

I do this if people have their front fogs on but i know the difference between fogs and DRL's, front fogs are the pointless things that annoy you cos the driver behind thinks they look cool. As for rears, dont get me started - a slight mist decsends and all the morons feel the urge to pull that knob but never know how to switch them off!

Anyone who flashes me for my DRL's will feel the full force of Xenon, Main beam and front fogs ;)

I thought that was just for un-marked police cars :)

Police cars round rotherham have a button on there light panel labled "Full Monty" didnt know pork had a sense of humour

Caught in traffic today i drove past someone who was walking along the road, and as i am good at lip reading it was easy enough to understand him pointing and saying "you have your fog lights on" hope he wasnt as good at lip reading! :swear::giggle: did think about turning teh DRL's off but i shouldnt have to cos a few numbnuts cant tell the difference ... wonder if Merc drivers have the same problem as their DRL's are even lower on the S class and if i remember correctly the new C class

My complaint with DRL's is that it makes motorists even lazier then usual from the point of view of looking for other traffic. Given most motorists barely look for cyclists and pedestrians at the moment, how likely is it they'll notice them when every motor vehicle around them has lights on to make them even easier to see. My guess is that car to car collisions will drop slightly as a result of DRL's but the number of pedestrians and cyclists killed will rise considerably.

Wondering what they will do in 2011 when they are mandatory. Their heads will explode!

I had mine switched on a few weeks ago, and have had a couple of flashes since. They're mostly from folks just trying to be helpful, but people sadly forget that you can't normally turn your fogs on without your headlights, so they can't be fogs (even if they're not bright enough but in the right place).

It'll pass... I grew up with a Saab... it was routine for people to flash us and mouth "lights" back in the 70s. As other posters have said, when it's more common then people will understand (or, perhaps, just explode with self-righteous indignation).

Anyone who flashes someone because they have led drl's on shouldn't be driving full stop they're probably the same morons that sit in the middle lane on motorways, they should just be disqualified for not knowing how to drive :swear::punch:

The DRL's on my Superb II are enabled and have been since the car was new in January 2009. I have not had anyone flashing. Perhaps non-LED or Bi-Xenon DRL's are less annoying due to their lower (but still acceptable) luminosity?

I was flashed yesterday for the first time in over three month of driving.

Ours just say "999" - rubbish - wish ours said "Full Monty" - it would add an extra sense of theatre to the phrase "fire up the roof" and "bring the noise"

Am I right in thinking that the DRL's get dimmer when you put your side lights on? If so - why?

They go to half brightness, no idea why.
