4x4 economy

Hi,

New report from a very satisfied 1.8TSi owner.

Total run now 6500km. First realy long journey, about 500km in one run gave maxidot value 44mpg.

Variable road quality, speed 70-90km/h. Journey went from Bergen, west coast of Norway to Elverum, eastern Norway. Mountain crossing at 1080m above sea- level.

WOW - imo thats outstandingly good for the performance available from that petrol lump. If I get 38-40mpg on our cross country drives I will be very happy indeed. :)

Have you really noticed the engine loosening up and feeling more responsive in that time/mileage also?

Thanks for the update.

Only 514 miles on the clock.

Mainly local journeys and Maxidot showing 35.7 mpg.

All seems very reasonable to me.:thumbup::thumbup:

I thinks it been very responsive all the time, but now that its got some miles done you obviously dare to use the power.

But if you want the mpg up you have to try keep revs at 1700-2500. On my recent trip I tried to keep revs below 2000 in 6th gear most of the time.

Re accuracy of various instruments.

Your speedo will always err on the overeading side so it can't be blamed for any tickets you might get!

Ie when it's reading 70 you'll actually be doing 65 to 68.

It will overead a touch more with worn and/or underinflated tyres as this reduces the rolling radius - hence more wheel revs per distance travelled.

You can easily check your accuracy with a GPS since these will give very accurate readings.

The maxidot will also err on the generous side I think simply because it looks better and gives the owner a warm feeling.

You can also check your odometer against a GPS on an extended journey.

I have found the odometer on most of my cars to be more or less bang on checked this way. My yeti is within 0.1 miles accuracy over a 70 mile journey.

Same comments apply re tyre wear and inflation though!

I'm aware of misreading instruments, but i'm not a fussbudget so of it's actually 42mpg instead of 44 I realy dont care. This is for other's to compare and as long as everyone know its a maxidot reading I think its pretty fair info to share.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Hi everyone

My pride & joy is doing about 42-43 at the moment and has 6500 on the clock (55 miles a day commute mostly M3 ) this I hope will increase after 10,000 miles as my golf tdi mk5 140 did once the engine settles down . I do find the 140 cr engine smoother than the old 140 pd engine in the golf aswell and still having the golf actually prefer the acceleration in the yeti compaired to it.

Nearly 9000 miles on mine (140 TDi) and the steady improvement in mpg continues. Average over last 3000 miles is around 44mpg (probably about 50 / 50 long runs and heavy trafficed commuting), however on a steady 75 ish run back up the M5 (50 through the numerous road works) I was staggered to see an average of 54mpg.

Well chuffed.

Our 1.9 tdi Octy one's overall average on the readout is the low 50's, I can get 60 ona trip if I drive like a grannie. In some ways Im dreading the new Scouit as this wont be anything like as good but thats emission driven progress I guess

I offset this with the 350Zed Twin Turbo which does a lot less, more smiles though, amazingly I can still get 30 mpg on long runs.

Re Instruments & trips, when I have checked them they are usually in the region of 5% out, 70 = 66.5 etc. As others have said Sat Nav is a better guide although be wary. My son was stopped recently & the excuse for the stop was he was doing 54 in a 50. Plod was less than impressed when he said he was using the sat nav as speedos are normally out, Plod was in a Focus so I guess didnt have a calibrated speedo. Nothing came of it, just a routine stop for a youngster

Gosh... that's good Stuart  - is that the best 4x4 mpg on the market?

We got 49. something on one trip this week and as the car is only a month old tomorrow we thought that was good for our Yeti!

Best wishes

My old Octavia 2.0 TDi used to return a reliable average of 60mpg. The Yeti is returning 50mpg under the same conditions.

Both figures are from the trip computers and with mainly rural commuting with little heavy traffic. The lowest trip I have seen was 47mpg but that was on a hasty trip via motorway to visit a sick relative.

The Octavias figures improved once the car hit about 20k miles and if the Yeti follows suit, I expect to be getting high 50's in a year or so.

Compared to my colleagues petrol Jeep Cherokee I am saving a fortune and the Yeti is quieter, faster, nicer to drive and more spacious.

Just to add my 1.2TSI 2WD 2p worth - with only 450 miles on the clock we're getting 42mpg on a varied mix of journeys.

We're off to Surrey tomorrow and then down to Cornwall for the weekend - so the car should be well and truely run in by Tuesday. It'll be interesting to see what the average then.

  • 3 weeks later...

After 500miles of predominatly London surburian driving average mileage according to trip computer is 31.8 to gallon, not bad I don't think compared to Mk 1 Octavia vRS wich was much the same after 6 1/2 years usage ( and was FWD only ), will keep you all posted partic. after our trip down to Monte Carlo in April.......

I've got the 1.8 too (fun isn't it?), and according to the trip computer my mpg in the center of London doesn't get above 25 mpg very often and on short runs - a mile or so it's closer to 20mpg or less! Especially through very slow crawling traffic. I had an Audi A4 2.0 before which was roughly the same, but I didn't keep my eye on the gauge as fuel was so much cheaper. I'm going to check my tyre pressure and see if that helps.

On my one long run the mpg crept up to 38, but that was hard work, nice smooth slow A roads and keeping it to 45 -55 in 5-6th gear. On another thread a chap in Norway got 44!! He must be a more patient driver than me.

My average seems to be about 35, but I rarely drive out of London. I think if I lived in the countryside I could possibly get the magic 40.
