Car insurance oddness

Featured Replies

I've been getting quotes for my daughters first car using Confused.com and can't understand why adding me and swmbo to her quote makes it cheaper, and not by a little bit we are talking a third off :o It won't make any difference to how the cars used so why the difference?

they think you are more sensible drivers and plus have more years no claims

I think their twisted logic is there are more driving the car over the same annual mileage, so the chances are you daughter (the highest risk) will be driving it less so less chance of it being crashed. Why it's such as high ammount I don't know, espeacilly as it normally asks if the other drivers have access to other cars meaning they aren't likely to spend much time on that one. But heyho, if it works in your favour then it's good surely.

Nice to see your not 'fronting' though like so many younger people.

I know at least Directline don't work like this, so don't try that when getting quotes from them. (Also, as an aside, don't fall foul to the named driver NCB as I did.:().

I'd be the only one with points on the quote as well (3) so why does that make it better? We have no intention of driving the car (likely to be something v.slow) at all if we can help it so there is little logic involved. If I add drivers to my insurance it goes up! Anyway I'm pretty sure we will be using this fluke whatever their reasoning :smirk:

My son added his girlfriend to his policy and it reduced the price - she hasn't even passed her test.

Insurance = highway robbery. They just think of a number. I really am surprised how they get away with it :finger:

Is your daughter the policy holder or you or your wife?

Insurance is a black art lol

My son added his girlfriend to his policy and it reduced the price - she hasn't even passed her test.

I did the some years back with my girlfriend (now wife) and it made it cheaper.

Now she can insure my car cheaper than me however I can insure her car cheaper than her. hmm

My daughter will be the owner and policyholder which is why its daft

my girlfriend added me to her policy so i was fully insured on her EK9 and it brought her premium down by a couple of hundred quid.

strange the way it works as i'm sure it used to just base the price on the highest risk driver.

good way to do it without cheating though as the car owner is still the policy holder unlike the old ways.

yet i added her to mine and mine hiked up a little.

Im the same, took my policy down from £730 to £540

Daft thing is, this was on my Passat. When I looked at a getting an A3 Quattro 2.0TFSi I phoned them up for a quote and they wouldnt insure me on it. They asked if id been looking at any other cars so I mentioned the A4 with the same engine. £50 refund on my policy and its a faster, higher insurance group than the passat was :S

It's all to do with statistics. Having a woman on your car insurance puts you into a group that is statistically less likely to have a crash. Lower risk = lower cost.

Same for having Dad on daughter's ins.

most insurance companies ignore the first 3 points.

Yep I add the girlfriend on to my insurance. Makes quite a saving.

Daft system but as I said I will be using it :giggle:

Had one bloke telllng me that desite having ooooodlesof NCB , it might be benificial to add wify to policy . Why ,asked me - she's no licence ,and I've got about massises od=f NCB .

Another anomaly - car costs £800, fully comp with £750 excess costs £716 but third fire theft only saves about a tenner or less. Whats the point of fully comp as you can't claim anything! In fact third fire and theft may be more useful as it only had an £100 excess so you could claim for something?

£750 excess? yikes!

Pass plus made no odds, can't really increase the excess as its already ridiculous, and we're already on it.

Anyway I was re-running quotes again on Confused etc last night and most of the "cheap" ones had gone! Now £1150 best offer! So I got swmbo to phone Elephant as they were the best (£716.30) the day before and the quote was valid until the 8th but even that had gone up a little  However they suggested something new that allows you to get 1year NCB from buying 10months insurance for £620 so we've gone for that. Now just to get the cash back from the daughter
