rally fabia gearbox 2/3rd gear etc

Featured Replies

hi, myself and a friend are rallying a pair of fabia 1.4 16v. and between us we have had three gearbox's with problems changing from 2nd to 3rd gear

where it feels like its gone into gear but hasn't, not good as you are flying into a tight corner.

(we've just done a trackday at cadwell park before someone tells me off for racing on the pubic highway ;~)

anyhow its prompted me into thinking about sorting the problem rather than just replacing with another 'scrap' box.

i've considered a quaife gearset but at £800 plus....... well ,yes it would be nice but.........

also we find a huge gap from 2nd to 3rd which drops the engine off power so i was wondering about wether a 1.2 would

a/ fit

and

b/ have better ratio's?

oh and does anyone know if the fabia was fitted with rear discs as standard (not the vrs ) and if so model and year

any thoughts would be appreciated , we're off to barbados rally in may and would like to sort this out properly before we go.

cheers simon.

p.s i did try and post a photo of my skoda chasing down a subaru but no luck !

I'm sorry I can't answer your questions about gearboxes. However I can about brakes. After looking at a brake catalogue I think the only cars that have rear drums are 1.2 petrol, 1.9 SDI and one of the 1.4 TDIs, but there is one with discs. All the rest of the range has discs, which are all the same diameter of 232mm (233mm according to EBC). Someone may correct me if I am wrong.

1.4 16v have discs

the only way you will get a tough, long lasting gearbox is by biting the bullet and getting that Quaife gear set, at least if you break a gear you will be able just to buy that one

I think the 100bhp 1.4 petrol had rear discs as standard. The 1.9TDi definitely does (cos my 2004 one has :p).

++EDIT: If it's any help, there's some of the brochures here - I think they may mention the brakes (I the discs come together with ASR or something like that).

yes the 16v and tdi have disks on the rear, the gearbox problem is quite common on the road cars if they are used hard i would have a look at what the polo challenge boys had available as they used the same engine/box, i think some of the problem is in the turret itself but also syncro's are very poor as the coating just wears off them
