Hi there. I am a driving instructor and I've recently upgraded from a fabia 1.9tdi to a Fabia vrs which I'm over the moon with. Seems to have a bit of a problem with fuel consumption which I can hopefully sort out. Can anybody tell me how long it takes to get upgraded to a Freedom member because I did so on Saturday and it still doesn't appear on my Status. Cheers :smirk:

I'm sure one of the senior staff members will check everything out with regard to your status soon!

As for the fuel consumption issue, what's the problem? Just not as low as you were expecting - plenty of things to try: new air filter; disconnect battery to reset adaptive settings; check various sensors... All on here!

I have already posted the problem on the Fabia I forum but will quite happily say it again here.

I only seem to be getting about 36 mpg even though the mpg gauge gives an average of about 46-47mpg. This means I am only getting about 345 miles out of a full tank of fuel when I should get 450+.

I used to have a Fabia 1.9tdi(100) which I used to get 460 miles out of a full tank and about 430 miles in winter.

I have had a full service(new air and fuel filters) which made no difference to the economy. After that I put it into the Skoda garage for a full diagnostic but nothing came up.

I know the bad weather and winter fuel affect the efficiency quite a lot but, assuming my gauges are working ok, the poorer mpg should show up on those, right? Bear in mind that I had a Skoda before so I am fairly sure the winter conditions should not affect it as much as it has.

The car is running fine with no more smoke than it should spew out. Any ideas would be most appreciated :wonder:

A couple of things to suggest, then:

First of all, calculate the MPG on 'brim-to-brim', rather than what the trip meter tells you - they're notoriously optimistic; secondly you're never going to get the same mpg out of a PD100 Fabia as you are out of a PD130 Fabia unless you're well into hypermiling! As a sort of 'point 2b' as well, the car is presumably second-hand, so there's also the possibility that it's been remapped, which could explain things. Bit hard to tell without a rolling road, but generally un-tuned cars run out of steam at some point between 3000 and 3500 rpm, whereas tuned ones will pull virtually to the redline.

HI there. Cheers for the reply. I calculated the mpg by brimming the tank and then running it down to when the 'miles left in tank' meter reads 0 miles left. It comes out at 36.5 mpg.

The garage said that the car hasn't been remapped and, like you said, runs out of steam at about 3500 rpm.

The thing is, being a driving instructor, I generally drive round almost all day like a grandad and the mpg gauge(which I know can be optimistic) is telling me that I average about 47mpg. I've just come in from a lesson just now and averaged 52mpg.

It's running fine though so it looks like I will have to wait to see if it gets any better when we get out of this winter weather.

Ah, you're misunderstanding 'brim to brim'! Reset your odometer when you fill up, and then next time you fill up, brim it again and make a note of the amount of fuel you put in. This will be the amount of fuel you used to travel the distance shown on your odometer, so one divided by the other is your MPG. It may be that the trip computer is out, but this can be re-calibrated using diagnostics...

That is the way I've calculated it. I always reset the odometer when I fill it up and then run it down until the needles on the bottom of the red and then wait until the 'miles left in the tank" reading ticks over to 0. From that point it takes about 43 litres which works out at 9.45 gallons. 345/9.45=36.5mpg. Does this sound about right for this time of year? Has anyone else got any idea what they're getting at the moment?

I think you're right about the trip computer being way out. This has confused me a bit because, in my other Fabia it was dot on.

Welcome to Briskoda :)

I've hardly been hanging about lately, but I'm still bettering 40mpg. It could be down to your students being so slow and labouring the engine, I suppose - I'm sure a search will yield some suggestions...
