Featured Replies

hello there

just purchased a vrs and wanna get it a turbo timer any one have them fitted? also just wondering the best one dont wanna be spending 100's but dont want ****ty cheap thing from halfords

cheers luke

Don't bother, they're of no use.

never heard of anyone fitting to a vrs..

With regard to modern automotive turbochargers, the need for a turbo timer can be eliminated by simply ensuring the car does not produce any 'boost' (during driving) for several minutes prior to the ignition being shut off.

no need for a timer at all, due to the relitivly low temp the tdi turbo run at its not a problem with modern oils, the turbo is really cool under normal running conditions due to the amount of air the diesel engine sucks thru it (no throttle plate to restrict), nothing like the glowing red hot petrol turbo's get up to,

as said just backing the throttle off a bit in the last mile or so if you have been caning it will do the job fine

You don't need one.

You also don't need a dump valve. I have a feeling that was gonna be the next question...

Ive often thopught bout this myself......................

People are saying you dont need one and that the turbo doesnt get very hot under normal conditions but what if youve not been driving normally? reguarly done by many people so it would be nice to have something to let it cool down without having to sit there for a few minutes.

honestly unless its glowing cherry red its fine (and it wont be glowing at all) its all to do with the efficiancy of the diesel engine and the way it converts its enegry into motion instead of heat..

most of the time the manifold will be cool as seen if you have an oil leak onto it it wont burn it off like a petrol car it just stays oily,

my mates truck has just done 1 million km's on the std origional turbo unit and you wont find a harsher life than that for one.

biggest killer is people who rev the engine before switching off and people who start with their foot down a bit so it instantly goes from 0>1500rpm in .5 of a second with no oil pressure

No need for one mate, the temp of the exhaust gas in a DERV are nowhere near that of a petrol. I just let it idle for up to a minute after parking, that's all you need. If I've not been driving hard, I just let the engine settle for 10 seconds and then switch off.

Just don't pull up on throttle and turn the engine off straight away, turbo's don't like spinning down from 100,000 RPM + to zero without adequate oil.

Likewise don't thrash it from cold either, the turbo won't thank you for spinning to 100, 000 + RPM until the oil is lovely and hot. I never go above 2.5 to 3k until it's up to temperature.
