Roof rack loads for Octy Scout

Featured Replies

I read that the max load for a roof rack on an octy estate is 75kg. Now surely this is the maximum safe load with which you can drive about.

What I'd like to know is whether the roof rails are strong enough to take a roof tent (assuming appropriate crossbars/fixings) when to potential load might be 150kg+ (two people). Clearly this load would only be applied with the car safely parked up!

I've seen these on Land Rovers and I can't help thinking the Scout would be a great holiday-mobile with a roof tent.

An example:

(The picture of one on a mini would seem to suggest that my Scout would be fine.....)

Just wondering the same, unfortunate that there were no replies, wonder if there will be some now?

I would imagine it to be the same as a regular estate. It's not the carrying capacity of the car but the load rating of the pillars. the fixings etc which are going to be shared across the variations. You also have the original manufacture specs to consider. If they'e only tested it to 75kg and you overload then you are not using the vehicle correctly and in the invent you had to slam the brakes on the fixings sheered the roof load goes flying causing death there would only be yourself at fault regardless how well it was secured to the bars.

Provided the tent's below 75kg when mobile then I can't really see a problem with it.

The dynamic load calculus that Skoda will have done to achieve 75kg in motion will almost certainly see them test it at double that weight.

It's not as if you're parking a 700kg helicopter on a Yeti for example....and if you do bend the bars (which is way more likely than damage to the roof fittings or pillars IMHO) then you can always sort another set from the scrappy!

I think most roof tents are under the 75kg, and I wouldn't be in it whilst on driving of course!!

Sure you'll be fine...

The land rover has a similar roof load rating - roof tents rock, use mine quite a bit - not had it on the scout yet ;-)
