Clutch pedal failure

Featured Replies

Clutch failure x 2 on my SLX TDI (pedal going to floor accompanied by black and white plastic bits in footwell) - problem was a broken clutch pedal (common fault). Get a garage to replace pedal and plastic for about £70-£90 all in. Don't be convinced it's the master cylinder, clutch, dual-mass flywheel etc - if they were fine before they'll still be fine with a new pedal!!

Mine did that a few months ago, I just got a chap at work to weld it up, and it's now far stronger than it was standard.

I might do the same as I've got the pedal and broken bit - I can then use it as a spare, of course. I've just looked at a VW forum where this is a massively common problem. My SLX TDi is 9 years old with 107k on the clock, which corresponds closely with age and mileage of other VAG vehicles with this problem.

I would have attempted a repair myself but was told it was very tricky. Unfortunately, the garage I took it to just put the plastic clip back initially without checking the pedal - this cost me £50, then it failed again. After scare stories about the clutch, master cylinder and DMF, they found the broken pedal and all's fine - total cost was £77 plus the original £50. Unfortunately, I need my car every day so I couldn't afford the time to investigate myself - I will next time!!!!

Just check they used a new bolt to mount the pedal - ours went a while back and they re-used the mounting bolt so the bolt failed a couple of weeks later...

It's a pain in the butt when this happens!

You're not kidding. The main pain for me was having to break down twice, have to be recovered twice and pay twice to fix the thing - and I probably could have done it myself given the time - but there you are, I didn't.

Skoda should have produced a beefed-up pedal to prevent this happening - it wouldn't be difficult or expensive.

The big note of caution is not to believe you need a whole clutch just because of this fault. My 'trusted' mechanic even said he could have blamed the whole thing on the DMF etc and charged me a fortune and I wouldn't have known. I told him that if I'd found this out I'd have camped outside the garage with a large sign saying 'rip off' not to mention the full page ad in the local paper - power to the people!!
