What Car Reader Reviews

Featured Replies

Well after weeks of checking I have just noticed the first Yeti entry on the What Car? reader reviews. Now I am guessing that this is the handywork of TP ? If so well done, otherwise I will keep guessing.....emoticon-0143-smirk.gif

Anyway, great to see a five star review for our beloved SM. If (silly question) there are other very satisfied owners out there please add a review and spread the Yeti message. I will add one too but better wait until after I have taken delivery.....

;)

TP

PS their review system was not accepting reviews for the Yeti; working now after a number of e-mails to a helpful member of their team.

Aaagh I hate it when people do this emoticon-0179-headbang.gif . Someone has gone onto the What Car? reader review site and posted a review based on a single test drive. I know that they are perfectly within their rights to do this (and I am partly annoyed because they have not given the Yeti a good review making the star rating go down) but these reviews are only valuable if they reflect the experiences of owners and long term users not some wannabe motoring journalist. How can someone comment on e.g. the running costs of a car that they have not owned. What Car? needs a moderatoremoticon-0183-swear.gif

A strange quote from the owners reviews:-

"The cabin quality and layout of controls are good. Because I am used to Japanees vehicle control layout I find some controls on this (and German) vehicle(s) strange, but I suppose its a matter of getting used to."

I came from a Nissan X-Trail and the only control that fooled me for a while was the wiper switch. On the Yeti it is moved up for ON. In the X-Trail it is moved down. At first I tended to move the switch from "intermittent" to "full wipe" when trying to switch the wipers off!! I can't see that this would upset anybody.

OH and reverse is next to First. (on the X-Trail it is next to Sixth.)

For me, the transition from the X-Trail to the Yeti was a great experience. The Yeti is still a joy to drive and now I look forward to the longer journeys. 4000 miles has loosened the engine and I have got used to the smaller door mirrors.

This is what annoys me about this section of the What Car? website. In theory it could be an invaluable source of feedback from owners and long term users but instead you get these random comments and inappropriate scoring which affects the overall average star rating of the car on the website. Someone on the site even posted a full review for the new VW Polo based on a single visit to a showroom without even driving the car! Irritating or maybe I am over reacting.emoticon-0120-doh.gif

There is a moment, usually on the test drive, when you instinctively know if a car is right for you.

I was lucky enough to have an Aston Martin for a weekend. It went like stink, sounded fantastic but was, for me, the most uncomfortable car I've ever had to sit in. Three trips to the petrol station to refuel also convinced me that, perhaps, an AMV8 was not for me!

We took the Yeti for a run, only a few miles, and it felt good - so a decision was made.

4000 miles later, I have my niggles, (well aired here) but the overall feeling is still very good. From an ownership point of view, it still ticks all the right boxes.

Now THATS the kind of comment the Yeti needs to sell in the millions!!!! "I turned down an Aston Martin and bought a Yeti":rofl::rofl:

Well it was b****y uncomfortable!!!!!!!!

What Car? readers are worse than the magazine itself!

Looks like there is going to be a comparison test in the May Whatcar: "The May issue of What Car? will pit the Qashqai against the Peugeot 3008 and the Skoda Yeti. Check out the magazine for the outcome".

See Qashqai Whatcar. Should be interesting.

The Peugeot will probably win, What Car love the Quashqai and they always seem to say that the Yeti is either overpriced or or the diesel engine is too gruff. I suppose it all depends on the specs of the cars tested though but I suspect the Yeti will come up as a credible contender nothing more.

What Car? being What Car? will probably publish a result this month and then an entirely contrary opinion next month. It all depends which work experience boy has been given the job of writing the road testemoticon-0114-dull.gif

I like the second readers review in What car from Greece.

What a nice idea stuffing your Yeti full of sacks of olives.

mmm..olives..mmm!

Maybe it's just me, but I would prefer to see that review and make my own decision as to whether to consign it to the mental dustbin or not, rather than not see it because it was 'moderated' out. As a matter of course I'm interested in hearing about immediate / first impressions as well as longer term review - it gives a fuller perspective of the whole driving experience and how it may change over time as the car changes as well. There's sometimes a small jump from moderation to censorship.

I always ignore any points system entirely and stick to reading the narrative, because the two often don't correlate and points awarded will be totally inconsistent in nay case since we are all individual people. I agree that a review on the basis of a showroom visit is pushing it however.

Browsing through WhatCar April edition at Tesco this morning as you do :giggle: ; noticed a short but positive article on the Monster in 1.2TSI and TDI 110 in both 2 and 4 pawed guise. The jurno appeared to slightly favour the 4 pawed variant from the gist of the text.

One way for us to counteract the amateur journalist review on Whatcar is for us to submit our own reviews. A few more five star reviews will quite quickly overturn his two star effort :wonder:

Nope…………..I still don’t get it

If you want to believe the praise you get from a car mag, then you have to take the stick too. Posting your own biased reports only adds to the fabricated ‘Star’ rating. You can not have it both ways. I love to read that some magazines say I have a car with possibly the best ‘real world’ diesel engine in production, but hate the fact they say the car is cramped and overweight and they don’t like the styling either :( . But I can’t believe the engine praise if I don’t accept the criticisms. You like your cars……great! You are happy with your cars…..great! Most magazines like your car……..great! Some people post a review that says they don’t like your car…….tough! I reckon you can tell pretty quickly if you fundamentally like a car or not, so perhaps the people who don’t like your car are just being honest.

Don’t forget that other people’s opinions are just that. Other people’s opinions. Some of these opinions brought you ‘Cars of the Year’ like the Talbot Horizon, Talbot Alpine Fiat Bravo! (perhaps the Fiat wasn’t such a bad car)

I had a Talbot Alpine - 'nuff said! It was quite roomy inside and had a good boot though.

I don't have a problem with anyone saying that they don't like the Yeti if they give good reason. My beef is with people who go on to what is marketed as a 'consumer' style magazine and give a car a star rating without having owned or driven the thing properly. I am, for example, quite within my rights to say that I don't like caviar and give it a one star rating as a food, but given that I have never eaten caviar I would not expect my rating to be taken too seriously. To say that you don't like something is not to say that something is bad and star ratings do give the impression of how good or bad something is. If you know nothing about cars and wanted to buy one you might think, I know I'll visit the What Car? website on which you will see 'scores' for cars that do not realistically represent how accomplished each individual car is.

I think that I am perhaps taking this a little seriously and will go for a lie down......

My Dad had a Solara and a Horizon!!! I even learnt to drive in a 1.1 Horizon (with a couple of months in an Allegro for good measure!!!!!)

I was making a generalisation about the way threads about star ratings and occasional reviews in car mags, generally go. There have been a few threads about poor ratings/reviews/opinions in car mags over that last few years and in general several post appear with people basically saying ‘how dare they!’. I believe you have to take rough with smooth in magazines, or else their reviews become meaningless. Off for a lie down too :D

Blimey...I only went to my mums for lunch and missed a blinder! :punch:

I hope you 2 are having a nice lie down... :giggle:

Just noticed that if you are lucky(?), they'll post your comments twice but assign them each time to a different model. My original comment is for the 4x4 Elegance but they have duplicated it and titled it 1.2TSi :D
