Strange "boingy" noise while steering at low speed

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Looking for some advice. My 52 plate Fabia 1.4 16v has developed an annoying noise when steering at low speeds. Its a sort of boingy noise when I am steering. I don't notice it when I am going straight only when pulling out or into a parling space. Yes I appreciate boingy isnt very descriptive for a sound, but thats how it sounds to me. My tyre pressure was okay when I checked last week. I hear it in the car up the steering wheel. I havent managed to check the power steering reservior yet thats my next stop.

Oh while I am on does the Fabia have like an oil reserve that doesnt register on the dip stick? i.e does it say have an extra litre or so just in case your red oilcan with the three bleeps (low pressure) goes off when you are in the middle of nowhere?. I have to assume it does cos my light went off last week and after i got home and drove to Halfrauds for some oil ( a nice wee 7 mile trip), the dipstick was bone dry!!. I assume the engine has some reserve as I got more oil into it and its still running!!?

Cheers Moosifer

Boing might be a broken front spring, or anti roll bar bushes/droplinks.

No oil on dipstick, very bad, there is no reserve as such, and there is a danger that when cornering, the remaining oil in the sump will get sloshed to one side, and the oil pick up pipe will just suck in air.

Moral of the story, check oil at least once a week and top up as required. DONT overfill

I used to be in a car pool with a muppet that knew nothing about cars but always claimed to put plenty oil - never cheap stuff only Makro's best, brake fluid and steering fluid into his newish Astra every week because he wasn't a "cheap skate" - I always hoped that he was a lier (he did come from Leith though). That car was very tolerant as his wife was an even worse driver I'd reckon - he used to do drag racing style launches every time I was late - the car didn't deserve that - so I'd give black Astra 1.6s a miss for a while just in case you buy his cast off!

Car being a 52 - its a bit late for it to be breaking its first set of springs - unless the mileage/useage has been very low - though maybe its finished off its second set of springs - nice!
