Steel wheels = track wheels?

Featured Replies

pretty much as above.

I'm thinking of getting a set of Golf 16" steelies to use on track this year (mainly so i can sell my OEM Fabia VRS alloys! but is it a good idea?

I'm thinking a reduction in ventilation could mean cronic heat build up from the 312's on track?

Although that said the standard Fabia vrs alloys aren't exactly that well ventilated!

Is extra weight also gunna be an issue?

Thoughts please (and try and keep the "I'll take the alloys please mate" comments to a minimum :))

I reckon there's probably more space between the rims and the caliper / disc with steelies, although that's not a massive consideration when you look at the size of the slot near the hub where the ventilation air goes into the disc vents. I don't reckon there's much in it weight-wise either. If the suggestion really is mostly to allow you to sell your stock wheels, then I'd say go for it. There seem to be plenty of Golf MkIV 16" steel wheels kicking about - there was a set with trims and legal tyres on the tip last time I was there. Shame I didn't think to have 'em away, now I think of it...

The steelies might actually be lighter than the alloys.

As for ventilation, no-one really understands airflow around wheels as well as they pretend to anyway.

what tires would you plan to run on them, aren't the steels 6" wide or something?

I'd check the weight, you want the lightest possible unsprung weight really..

We can get Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's at good rates if you wanted me to take a look..

Kev

Size - 6.5JX16H2

Offset – ET42

Stud pattern – 5/100

I was thinking of doing exactly the same but keeping my standards as spares.

Weight wise, i always thought the steel wheels were about the same, give or take a few kg

I think the width of the steel wheels are 6.5. Same as the standard alloy, it all depends what tyre youre going to use aswell as the ones i was looking at, Toyo R888, dont come in a 205/45/16 fitment

Paradas? I don't really know what constitutes a decent track tyre over and above a decent road tyre...

i would say be careful with steels as they dont have the heatsoak ability of alloys and can lead to overheating the wheelbearings and brakes, we found this out with stage rally cars and untill we used alloy wheels we kept destroying wheelbearings..

Wow - new thing every day...

I'd advise pradas in case of tire choice.. Perhaps less grip than a Toyo R888, but outlives them tenfold!

Whatever ditch finders they come with!

idea was to make money out of selling the standard alloys so a brand new set of TD's (or infact track tyres) is out of the question! (Brian will make a salesman out of you yet though!!)

That is the kind of thing i was concerned about. Finding alloys too hot to touch after 20 minutes on track I was concerned about creating red hot glowing steelies!

I'll be giving my steelies a bash around wherever as the fronts have TR-1's fitted B) so if you happen to see a fabia wiv glow-in-the-dark rims at an airfield near you :rofl:

How good a price?

Tell me more Kev ;)

We've got good links to Team Dynamics / Rimstock..

Basically just need the spec of what you want.. ET, size, stud pattern, style etc and i can get a quote... The last set for our demo car we even had them machine the Team Dynamics lettering out of the rim :) lol

Drop me a pm with the info if you want a quote..

Thanks

What do a set of vRS sell for? £150? Set of steels secondhand for about £50? Sounds like a load of hassle to make about a hundred quid and make your car look worse in the process

Read the OP. They're for use on track.... :wonder:

OI! I'll make my own snide comments thanks! :p

Julie - if you have £100 spare by all means send it down to me and i'll give up my crazy plan and leave the alloys in the shed for track work

Barrie - I look forward to it! I'm thinking Abingdon on the 12th March?

Wouldn't a scabby un-loved set of standard alloys be a better alternative?

I'm thinking more like May TBH mate, I have a few things to pay for in March/April repairs from July @ Hullavington, repairs to brake hoses from last month :'(

I actually think black steels on a slammed red fabia would look good.. Been contemplating it on my car, just wouldn't want anything under 7" wide...

Cheaper = better in my book

Perfect - given my alignment problems I may not have spare funds anyhow

It works for the 106 Rallye

With standard 205/45/16 fitment?

youre not wrong there Pastyboy :)

Which on 4 wheels adds up, ALOT.

Might be worth checking that - a friend has an Astra, and found their alloy wheels were heavier than the steel ones!
