To change or not to change?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am due to replace my standard dampers with uprated items and my question is this... do I change my springs at the same time? I have had the springs (eibach) fitted for about 60k miles and was wondering if anyone has any ideas about spring lifespan. My local VAG tuner in Chesterfield said that they would not fit new dampers with old springs but I dont know if they are just saying this to get more money out of me!!! I prob would not get them from there as I know they are expensive and that they are beginning to fall out of favour with people, but I am unsure as to whether or not their advice was correct!.

All opinions / views welcome!

Stephen

Personally, if the springs aren't excessively corroded or suffering from cracked or broken coils, I'd stick them back on. Eibachs tend to be good quality anyway :)

Stick with the current springs, there shouldnt be a need to change them.

There is no intrinsic technical reason to change springs and dampers at the same time. The worst that could happen is that you finish up with a car that's over-critically damped (suspension movement on bumps is controlled by how fast the dampers allow the springs to compress).

My standard spring snapped in two the other week after about 98k or so. I reckon a higher quality item with lower miles should be fine to stick back on.
