VIBRATION AROUND 65MPH

Featured Replies

Hey folks can anyone help with this query: My car is vibrating quite bad at around 65mph at first I thought it would just be a simple case of having the alloys balanced but as I was changing the alloys and putting new tyres on I didnt bother got new tyres yesterday alloys all balanced and am still having the same issues. It got that bad yesterday I felt like I was going to be sick with the movement within the car so i have to drive at either 60 or 70mph. Any ideas on what the problem could be suspension, alloys, bearings I am open to suggestions

Drive shaft?

swap the wheels front to back, if nothing changes it rules out a buckled alloy

As first post already replaced alloys and tyres so so far 6 different tyres 4 alloys still vibrating

Running through balance-related options.

Centre-lock or finger-plate mounting balance machine? I'f it's just a centre-lock, try and find a place with a finger-plate balancer.

Have you ever used any form of tyre sealant? These can be associated with balance problems because they drain to the bottom of the tyre and stay there for a bit, so the "heavy" bit ends up someplace different every time you stop for several hours.

Is the yellow (sometimes red) dot on the tyre wall about adjacent to the valve? This is a light spot, to counteract the heavy spot of the valve core itself.

As above possibly a driveshaft out of balance.

Diagnostics.

Does the resonance remain when you drop from top gear to 4th or 3rd?

If not, can you induce it by driving at those revs in a lower gear (at lower speed obviously)?

I get something similar, but it isn't consistant, so make it a pain to find the cause..

For me, I can see it being a driveshaft issue, but the theory of the tyre sealant may be worth looking into, as my is worst

if I make a brief stop, say at a motorway service area, the vibration is pretty bad after that, but wears off.

Had wheels balanced, but didn't help, though about trying a new set of wheels, but not reached that point yet.

No tyre sealant in either set of alloys unsure of the dropping gear idea tho at one stage after going to 80mph (sorry officer) took my foot of the pedal when it hit 70mph and below it got worse or felt worse it's one of those annoying problems making me hate driving the car. Taking it to a garage at some point this week so hopfully have it sorted soon

Sorry read your post tooooooo quickly, assumed it was the same alloys rebalanced

My thoughts would be...

Obviously not wheels/tyres as these have been changed.

If it only happens at a certain road speed, no matter which gear, then it must be wheel bearing/hub/driveshaft/brake disc warped?

If it only happens in one gear that would seem to suggest a gearbox issue.

If it's at a given engine speed in every gear then it's engine or flywheel/clutch or possibly harmonics with floor pan or exhaust mounts etc.

If it comes on after a certain distance and gets worse as you drive further or faster it's a sticking brake which then gets hot and warps, causing vibration..

The last one happened on my BMW and had me flummoxed til I tried touching the affected wheel and burned my hand!

NB: I'm not a mechanic, these are just my ideas. Think you need to experiment a bit to find out what brings it on.
